Lake Norman please. Provided I could afford one of those monsters.

Quick Google search says that Tennessee wins in income and property tax but loses in sales tax.
So I guess I’ll live in Tennessee and work in Tennessee, but try to buy as many of my goods from North Carolina as possible.

Having lived in both states, TN by a miles and specifically east TN though Wilmington, NC isn't bad. Research triangle was horrendous 20 years ago and can only imagine how bad it is now.

NC has some uppity douche nozzles worse than Ole Piss.

East Tennessee is beautiful, but full of hicks and lacks the economic opportunities.
Most people think all of East TN is just like Pigeon Forge.

Most all of the border between the two is some of the most rugged terrain in the Eastern US - and either part of a National Park or National Forest.
There aren't a whole lot of options for where you will live in Tennessee and be able to easily run across over to NC to buy a gallon of milk to save on sales tax.

Depending on where you are, Georgia, Virginia, or Kentucky may be as good an option as NC for that.
The “heat map” of sales tax in the US shows the worst rates in Cali, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Kentucky has some of the lowest ones outside of three counties bordering Tennessee. That area of Virginia is really low too.

NC is nice. We're in Raleigh now but will migrate towards the mountains as we get older

Does Tennessee have an ocean?

at some point, it's all the same and you just pick the area that specifically fits your needs and interests best.

Great town.
1 hour from Asheville and a few hours from Charleston.
Well, except for the abundance of taters...

TN has an ocean of freshwater lakes and streams. Make fishing license checks out to Queso Dip and Associates. $35.00 with the OT discount code.

For everyone comparing the State Income taxes only, how do the other taxes compare (sales, property)?
NC Property Tax - Averages 0.77%
TN Property Tax - Averages 0.64%
NC Sales Tax - Max 7.5%
TN Sales Tax - Max 9.55%
NC Annual Title & Registration Fees - $34
TN Annual Title & Registration Fees - $39
Current Average Regular Gasoline Price per gallon (AAA.com):
NC - $3.593
TN - $3.443
Price of land per acre (landsearch.com)
NC - $33,435
TN - $18,600
So...your land cost more, your property tax rate is higher, and if you are working...you pay state income tax if you are in NC vs TN.
