Yeah, all those good job opportunities and vibrant areas with good communities. Who on earth would want to subject themselves to that?

If I am moving, I’m going to be retired from one job and would be able to telecommute for any future one.

Politics and keeping a bigger chunk of my income would be my priority.

For everyone comparing the State Income taxes only, how do the other taxes compare (sales, property)?

Probably North Carolina. Somewhere in the mountains but close enough to the coast for a weekend trip

Yup

Ya'll flying from Boone or Asheville to Topsail or the Outer Banks on your OT baller plane?

Otherwise, you're spending 11-12 hours in a car for a weekend. No thanks.

Better towns in western NC vs eastern TN.

Yep, NC has much nicer mountain towns than TN. Though more expensive.

East TN and it's not close.

NC went full mask nazi, TN not so much.

The less authoritarian Yankees the better.

Fair. If you really want to maximize proximity to mountains and coast, while living in a city, Greenville SC is your answer

You can get somewhere like Hilton Head, SC from there in 4-5 hours driving - at least the Asheville area.

Great town.

1 hour from Asheville and a few hours from Charleston.

I too have heard good things about Greenville, sc. think I would pick there over any city in NC or TN.

To answer the question western NC seems like it has better small towns but then again haven’t most of them been taken over by yankees?

I've lived in Both. Raleigh and Nashville/Murfreesboro.

Tennessee is a better run state. Economic opportunities are plentiful for both with incomes probably slightly higher in Raleigh.

Taxes were really favorable in TN. No income tax and no ridiculous property tax like in Texas. Sales tax is 9.5%+ everywhere though.

Tennessee has free college through it's lottery programs and does a lot to push further education after highschool through cost effective means even if not the traditional college route.

You couldn't go wrong with either.

Overall North Carolina is probably a better state as it has more desirable places to live, while outside of Middle Tennessee the rest of Tennessee is lacking.

East Tennessee is beautiful, but full of hicks and lacks the economic opportunities. West Tennessee is comparable to Mississippi and Arkansas and really has no redeeming qualities outside of good food.

Meh. I'm one of those people that lives two hours from the mountains and two hours from the beach. In my experience people often tout this but then they only spend a weekend per year at each, if that. It's amazing how two hours away might as well be on the other side of the planet when you're embedded in the ditch of everyday life.

It's better tp pick your home based on the immediate surroundings and economic factors and then hop on a plane to the Rockies or Caribbean when you get that itch.

I recently bought property in NC. We debated btw the two.

Ultimately for us NC has a way better tax structure and more bang for your buck esp in Western NC

That’s interesting to hear as NC seems pretty dang well run to me.

Then again, I moved here from Illinois, so my scale is probably a tad skewed.

I’ll take East Tennessee since there’s no income tax.
