This was 22 years ago, but call your insurance company and clarify what is covered for birth.
Days allowed
Any additional days due to any complications.
When newborn was added/needs to be added.
Etc.
Your answer should be “I did that”
Ask for forms again so you know what you are looking for. They should be filled out by hand and copied so you can drop off AGAIN.
26 years ago, my first was in hospital 2 months, in one in level 3 NICU, one in step down. Bill was 750k and said they didn’t have the proper forms filed. I “found” the proper dated and filled out form in the administrator’s office where they had misplaced it on top of a file cabinet. Handed it to her and left.

not to mention the cost of birthing a child... its out of control and needs to be addressed

They tried that crap with me. Claimed my child was uninsured and I was responsible for charges.
I still use the line the admin person kept telling me over and over again for her argument when I talk to my wife about our son today….
“But he’s his own person”….
This was in reference to my argument that he was covered by wife’s insurance since he was just born and wasn’t alive prior to add to insurance policy.
Her argument was he wasn’t on policy and he is a separate person from my wife.
No way this is real? I can’t believe an insurance administrator is that retarded.

Also, the charge may have been $178k, but that is essentially a fake number. Nobody (insurance or patient) will ever pay a full hospital charge. It is a made up number and varies wildly hospital to hospital.
I don’t know of any other industry/business/vocation that handles pricing in a way that’s false on the surface like this. Hiding rates and pushing fake astronomical totals is why people are outraged with health care here.
If I took my car to a mechanic who wouldn’t provide reasonable rates and estimates up front, I’d find another mechanic. Unfortunately that option isn’t available with health care providers.

Totally agree, it's one of the many dumbfounding things about hospital billing. It makes something that's already complex enough that much more confusing for the average person.
Another big thing that many don't know is that you'll pay a fraction of the cost for any service if you pay cash. If it's the end of the year and you aren't near your deductible or out of pocket, you're probably better off paying cash if you have it avaialble.

Maybe health insurance is a fricking scam and we should abolish the system and come up with something better
Health insurance should not be a for profit industry. Same with homeowners insurance.

They are self insuring
They can't fine a high deductible plan?

Damn, we paid $1k deductible then $280 out of pocket at a Level IV Maternal/Level IV NICU Private medical center.

It’s real
How about this one..
We would go to Dr at Tulane hospital, they would order a RSV shot from the in house pharmacy at Tulane hospital one floor down. Did that for 6 months. Started getting bill for my portion owed at 5k for each shot, 30k total. Go to ins admin and she says oh, the pharmacy is out of network. I say I never filled the prescription, your MD did and administered shot. Says nothing they can do. I do the “can I talk to your supervisor”. Do that for months and finally work up to Director of Patient Accounting. She says nothing she can do. As I’m leaving, I say something about my wife woking there and her lightbulb goes off. Part of employment contract for residents is all co-pays are waived. She waives the 30k co-pay and we are done.
Daughter ends up catching covid anyway and almost dies. Side note the Patriots were in the Super Bowl and visited NO Children's Hospital. Kevin Faulk came in a left her a signed little football near her O2 tent.

They shouldn’t have to try and “survive.”
Weak deflection.
The article stated that they couldn’t survive.
I’m questioning the veracity of that claim.
Quit being a bitch.

While she was at it I would've loved to hear her explain how they planned to collect from an infant child

Google US Senate filibuster. Also read a couple of posts before yours it’ll explain the 60 votes threshold required to bring a bill up for a vote in the Senate.
You’re welcome for being educated on basic legislative matters of your federal legislative branch.
