Its an ok deal for NYC, I just wouldn't care for all the shared space. I'm not in college anymore. For reference, my similarly sized snd trimmed studio up here is >2k and thats before any bills.

Yes, I could. Maybe I would have to share a spot with a roommate, but to say you can't live in the Bay Area without making six figures, you are wrong. I lived in the South Bay for over two decades, and I lived there comfortably on less than 40k. My sister lives in the Haight, and works for a startup that pays her well. She lives with a couple roommates, but she doesn't make anything near 100 grand. If you are raising kids, then yeah, cost of living really becomes a hurdle. There are plenty of Mexicans working at McDonald's that live in the Outer Sunset.

No but I live in the country and id prefer my free house and free utilities that my company provides me with along with a fat salary to manage a fish farm. And I don't have to live with a bunch of liberal twats.

I'll just have to keep buying my beer I guess

I lived in dorms for a year in college. While they weren't nearly that nice the worst thing about it was the lack of privacy. Communal bathrooms? Ain't doing that shite again.

Wonder if they just throw you out the window if you get pregnant.

for me, the cost is the cost....if it's adjusted for the avg cost of living in your area, so be it

Financially, I can completely see the appeal

but frick if I have to share my cable, kitchen, and bathroom with a bunch of revolving strangers

dorm, hostel, nursing home - no matter how they market it, still doesnt overcome the issue of my personal space. It's not like anyone is getting any alone time in NYC as it is, at the least I would think that at home I could get a modicum of solace

Probably the Cadillac effect. People will pay more for something that isn't that great just to claim they do it/own it. Something trendy

It's just hard for me to think, relax, and be productive if I can't get alone time to unwind. Living in something communal like that would stress me out.

You could not live in the South Bay on 40k now. An AP article yesterday said to afford the median rent in Alameda you needed to make $67 an hour....the bay you knew is long gone and tech bros have taken over.

I'd live in a tent and sleeping bag before I lived communally like that. Boot camp was bad enough. I need my personal space and alone time.

I wouldn't mind living in a building with a really nice communal living area and kitchen, but frick sharing a bathroom. I think a bedroom with enough room for a queen bed and a small area for a love seat, plus the private bath... Say, 250 square feet total... I wouldn't have been against it when I was single.

I would live in an adult frat house. I think they made a movie about one.

If it wasn't for the communal bathroom, I could do it. It's not that expensive at all for NYC. I'd have to be under 25, but up until then, I could probably swing it.
