Would you or have you purchased a vehicle virtually?

I'm in the market for a used car and there are much better deals in Houston versus anywhere in Louisiana. What should I realistically expect with buying a car online? Anything in particular I should watch out for? If anyone can share their experiences, it would be greatly appreciated.

Done it several times. Get a PPI from good independent shop and you’ll probably be fine.

I just purchased my second used vehicle from Carvana online last week. Very easy process. They handle everything for you including financing (optional) and registration

No knock against anyone who does this, but for me to buy a vehicle, I have to drive it first.

Depends on what you mean. I've negotiated the purchase of my last two vehicles via email, but I went in to do a test drive and fill out the paperwork. Not sure how I would feel about doing the entire purchase online unless it was a brand new car and I had already test driven something of identical spec.

Congrats on overpaying by at least $3k

Yep if I’m buying a vehicle I would rather the hours back and forth in a dealership like I always have. They will always win but eventually make mistakes that always helps by doing it this way.

Last month I flew to DFW to purchase a new truck in a Ft Worth Suburb....the savings justified the flight there.....but I halfway expected to buy a flight home ...but the process was smooth because we negotiated everything prior to my arrival.
I tried to have a few local (Baton Rouge) dealerships see if they could alter their sale price for the same make and model that I wanted - they weren't willing.

I’ve jerked it virtually so I’m sure I’d be comfortable buying a car that way. You could even take a test drive.

I bought my wife’s navigator from Texas Auto direct in Houston online. I test drove it when I got there and then bought it. It was painless. They came $1000 off asking, and that was as low as they went. It was already much lower than an anything I could find around here.

I bought a Tacoma off Ebay sight unseen in 2012 for $9500. It's worth $8500 today. I did well.

I saved like 6k buying a 4Runner in Michigan over the south.
I asked the guy up there why they were so much cheaper. He said the Toyota dealerships in the south get their cars from a distributor which tacks on a few thousand to each car. He said we order our cars directly from the factory and don’t pay that.
Not sure if it’s true but I saved several thousand dollars buying up there.

Watch out for scams. I paid $25k for an Explorer and they sent a Christopher Columbus impersonator to my house.

I purchased a BMW motorcycle off eBay. I paid about $25 (20 years ago) for a mechanic to inspect it. Worked out beautifully.
I sold a Porsche 356 which I had restored on ebay. Fortunately, two potential buyers got into a bidding war during the last hour and I sold the car for about twice what I expected.

I've purchased 2 cars sight unseen, and both have worked out.
Probably not the best idea in hindsight, but I bought a Jeep Wrangler from South Texas, and had never even test driven one here
We just decided we wanted a Jeep, and I found the one I wanted, did the paperwork via e-mail and had it shipped to me for $500.
The other was an Escalade, and we drove a few locally before finding a great deal on a certified used one in Dallas. I contacted our local dealer and he said 'if that price is right, go buy it- I can't get anywhere close to that'. Best part is the weekend after I took delivery, somebody reduced the price of the car on the website, so I called the salesman and had him send me a check for the difference since he previously told me that was the best price they could offer.

Bought a brand new motor cycle from Mancuso Powersports in Houston online and had it shipped to Columbus, Ohio.
Dealer started it up and sent me a video so I could see it and listen to the upgraded exhaust package on it.
Have also done negotiations/haggling online for past three vehicle purchases. Show up at the dealer, test drive, sign the paperwork and leave. I refuse to piss around for 3-4 hours in the dealership anymore.

My current truck I bought from Dallas sight unseen. Had someone from the dealer drive it to me.

I know a guy who bought car online, not through Carvana or anything, but from a dealership in Chicago area and they shipped it to him.
The car was great but they somehow never showed the picture of the car where it has a nice scrap along the roof about 2 feet long. He was pretty ticked at that part but he said he's in a bind since his other car shite the bed and is undriveable.

Bought a SportTrac from EBay several years ago. Also bought an SUV from Texas Direct (now owned by Vroom) back in 2019. Pretty easy and straightforward process. Got a better deal than I could find around BR for sure.
