It’s 44 and drizzling here right now. I’d take this over the freeze in Boston and the unpredictability of Dallas

I'm a rabid libertarian. And have voted that way since 2000. So don't assume I'm some right wing Trumpkin.
I abhor authoritarianism. And I see it far more from the left these days than the right. Like I said, 30 years ago it was different.
The left has become what the right was.

And yes, it is like that most of the time.

That's purely a progressive thing these days. The left has become everything the religious right was 30 years ago.
Seattle proper was great until the Battle of Seattle. Maybe even a few years before that when every kid with a guitar and heroin addiction showed up homeless on the streets.
The WTO protests in 1999 brought in a violent extremist element that never went away.

Been there a few times. The land is beautiful - the people are not, thus, the entire state is an arse and Seattle is the uncleaned hole. Just visit a city park and you'll see.

Did this a while back.
Was lured by a big promotion, a dream work environment, job perks I never imagined in the South, and excellent public schools.
The family quickly felt the sting of crazy-expensive house payments, vastly higher living costs, and weird taxes (like outrageous vehicle registration fees).
Weather was dark most of the time. The air is clean because it's always raining. People are reserved, gloomy and negative. Most restaurants suck.
It's all pretty depressing if you're used to the "can-do" southern attitude.
Wife was even more desperate to leave than me.
At least we made a small fortune selling that house after two years. We bought a way nicer place down here with the proceeds.

What was the vehicle registration fee? I have to do this soon and slightly concerned
Posted on 1/24/24 at 11:50 am to fareplay
I think it's about 10% of sales price in louisiana. how much higher can it get?

I was doing research and said if you bring a used car over 3 months from out of state you’re exempt. Was yours new?
Posted on 1/24/24 at 11:56 am to fareplay
Back then the registration fee was based on the state's estimate of your vehicle value.
I recall the wife's basic minivan was the better part of $1000 per year but that may have changed.
Prayers sent if you're driving a Suburban High Country.

Similar to Boston then. My Tesla was $500 a year and I’m concerned about my new car being higher than that. May leave it registered out of state

It was $600 for me to register my 2017 jeep grand Cherokee in 2022 in Washington.

Went to a park with a friend on a layover there. Waterfront, beautiful park, had a nice garden. Behind the bushes were homeless camps, all around the park. You couldnt see them most of the time, but they came crawling out and took over the place.

The weather is completely goddawful, and it's dreary, wet, dark, and cold 8 - 9 months a year; I don't particularly like Chicago or New York weather, either, but I would take that weather 10/10 over Seattle
Nah. This is drastically overstated. The "bad" months are Nov - Feb. It's dark everywhere in the country then, so who gives a shite? The Chicago weather is materially worse than PNW, IMO.
Have lived in both places 4+ years, and Seattle is far, far worse weather-wise. Not even really close.

Move to Louisiana and it will make that look cheap
Posted on 1/24/24 at 12:05 pm to RedRifle
Hell no! I would not live outside of the South no matter how much money I was paid.
Posted on 1/24/24 at 12:09 pm to RedRifle
Also, we stopped bringing the kids into Seattle when we saw pushers openly dealing heroin on the streets near Pike Place Market.
frick that.
frick that.

At least everything else in Louisiana is cheap

I lived in Sammamish from 2011-2014. It was close enough to the city where if you work the city the commute wasn’t too bad.
We loved it there it was just too far away from our families.
