not exactly a drastic uproot and move

While not ideal, that's a significant pay raise that's hard to ignore. If nothing else, look at it as a possible stepping stone to something else.

I'd go
Houston is not that far off from Austin.

Houston traffic sucks but it isn't a shitty city...
I would still put a lot of weight on how much you'd like your new job.

So even the 'shittier' part is debatable.
Do it.
Don't hesitate.
It's not like Houston is Brownsville or anything.

Pros: Instant promotion, Significantly higher pay (nearly double), Cheaper cost of living city, and closer to family, no kids.
Cons: Shittier city
Unless the new place is bumfrick idaho I don't see any real reason why not take the job considering all the pros.

exactly
Austin is pretty expensive and I'm assuming his salary is somewhat low, so he probably can't do much
to double his current salary to move to Houston? This seems like an easy decision to me

are we talking doubling 30k, 50K, 200K...? how's the stability of the two compare, will you be maxed out at the new place? what's the potential at the current place?
Even if he's maxed out at the new place he probably isn't guaranteed double where he is for the rest of his career at his current position.
Just take the job.

so true and the neat thing about the position raise and pay is that when he changes jobs again, he will be treated to opportunities at the same or higher than the better paying job from now on, forever. Thank you HR.

So the job is in Houston? Austin is an awesome city with shitty people. Houston is an okay city with great people.
For double the money, you're a fool not to take it.

Yeah, this is a borderline subtle brag thread.

Usually comes from people who commute from areas outside of Houston.
Live in the city and you have no problems.

From Austin to Houston.
edit: I would move anywhere for double pay, but I already live in the most (or second most) expensive city in the country. I could become financially independent in less than 10 years.

Like most answers, it depends. There is a price tag I'd give to my lack of stress and current job details, but I'd have to be hit with the numbers to know how I'd roll with it.
DOUBLE pay would certainly talk volumes to me.

frick you man. I'd take a pay cut to move back to Splashtown, TX.

Good plan to see if your current employer will match the new offer. Best of luck

Depends on job and city, as well as current upward mobility in my current job.
I actually did this a couple of years ago (turned down a with much higher pay). I don't regret it. This week I will interview for a big jump at my current job.
