Last weekend I helped a neighbor install a house mount flag pole and it actually had extra clips to fly at half mast, I had never seen this on a pole like that before. I guess it isn't half mast it puts the flag essentially at the bottom of the pole but being off the ground it is clear what it represents. I thought is was an interesting addition.

Several folks have pointed out here that the term “half-mast” specifically refers to when a flag is flown on a vessel.
The term mast also applies to a fixed flagpole located on a Naval installation.
The correct term for all other terrestrial flagpoles would be “half-staff” which means the OP (generally) should have used half-staff in his original question.
And if I had a flag that could be lowered to half-staff, I’d do it if any POTUS died.
