This is the ZR2 model, with locking front and rear diffs, more clearance, and better approach angles.

Chevy has streamlined the bulk of its configurability for the 2023 Colorado based on the popularity of the previous-generation truck, offering this new unit exclusively as a four-door crew cab with the shorter five-foot-two-inch box. From base Work Truck (WT) trim up to the dust-busting ZR2 off-roader, Chevy has opted to offer what most people want, even if that means giving some people more than they need by dropping short-cab and long-bed options.
Proportionally, the new Colorado is 2.3 inches wider than the previous pickup. The new Colorado also uses a 3.1-inch-longer wheelbase across all trims, and a shorter front overhang to help improve approach angles. The new ZR2's 38.3-degree approach is more than an upgrade from the last truck's 31.8-degree angle; it's also better than the current Tacoma TRD Pro's 35.0 degree approach. In this segment, the Gladiator wins this metric with a gnarly 43.6 degrees of approach angle.
Colorado wheels now use the full-size Silverado 1500's 6.0-by-5.5-inch bolt pattern, which opens up aluminum wheel options from as early as 1999. With bigger hubs come larger brakes. The four-wheel discs on the 2023 Colorado are now over an inch larger up front, and nearly an inch bigger on the solid rear axle. It's grown 200 to 300 pounds heavier in 4WD configuration, but the biggest increase is for ZR2 models. The last crew-cab ZR2 we tested had the soon-lost 3.6-liter V-6 and weighed 4749 pounds, but the new ZR2 is up in pant size to 5298 pounds, the largest increase we noticed from the specs provided.

The midlevel Z71 and new-for-2023 Trail Boss trim come with a 310 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque with 7700 pounds of max towing. That's the highest in the segment. This powertrain is also available for WT and LT levels.
Finally, the big-daddy ZR2 has the same horsepower as Z71 and Trail Boss, but with 430 pound-feet of torque at 3000 rpm. That's a 121 horsepower and 61-pound-foot improvement over the outgoing diesel engine. Chevy says any trim can upgrade to the high-output engine through their Limited Production Option (LPO) preorder offer.

It will continue to be built by the folks at GM's Wentzille, Missouri, assembly plant, with the start of production sometime in the first half of 2023.

Eh, I wouldn't kick it out of bed.

I don't think I'll ever be a fan of short bed trucks.

would above average width make any difference?

Blue collar workers are going to love it

I'd drive the AEV ZR2 edition if it was given to me

The cost between mid size and full size truck is negligible considering what you get per dollar. And these V6's don't get that much better mpg than the V8's.
Unless you just want a smaller truck, these things don't make any sense.

If it cost 35k maybe
They have the Ascension Parish edition that might be right for you. You'll have to add the white rubber boots between the cab and bed though.

For that price no, I’d buy something else. But there’s nothing wrong with that truck.
For free heck yea I would.

They haven't released pricing yet on the new ones.

With all the increases/upgrades, it sounds like they're slowly fine tuning it back into the 1500 level truck, maybe slightly smaller body. People bought these smaller trucks because they wanted a smaller vehicle that was also a truck. Now they're slowly and incrementally beefing the truck up and hyping people up to have bigger trucks again. Somewhat comical.

So, they’ve already turned “full sized” pickups into oversized tanks. Now they’re making “mid-sized” trucks even bigger. There’s a reason I’m in the market for a mid-sized truck, and it’s not because I want something bigger.

I like the silver one and the red one. The interior looks great too.
The blue one is a bit overstyled for me.

I had a 2008 Colorado I bought brand new off the lot for like $18k. Drove the hell out of it; traded it in with 210k miles in 2018.
IIRC I got $9500 from Supreme Chevy in Gonzales on the trade in. Extremely reliable, never had an issue with it and I always kick myself for getting rid of it. A tiny crew cab truck that gets solid gas mileage like that is extremely convenient for quick runs to Home Depot, etc.

I’ve only ever owned one truck: my 1999 F250 SD PS short bed. I was looking at F150s a couple years ago and learned that short bed is no longer 6.5ft in modern truck parlance. It was like I was speaking a foreign language with the dealer. I just didn’t want 8’ bed. Normal short bed. And not freaking 5’. What am I going to do with that?

Those first generation Colorados do well if you aren't in an area that uses a lot of road salt. Most of the ones up north are rust buckets by now.
Tacomas from that era had it even worse.

currently 2 years into a 2019 Colorado... no problems to deal with as of yet (knock on wood)
I enjoy driving my Colorado and probably enjoy driving this new model given the chance

Sharp looking truck. What kind of motor is in this thing? V6 or turbo'd 4cyl?
