It's a tavern style beer crust pizza which not everyone likes. Also seems to be a big difference between the corporate ones and the franchise ones, the franchise ones always seemed to have the better pizza. It's a good pie, it's not earth shattering, but it's bounds better than the national chains. I honestly don't know if the hate is because those posters don't like the style, felt like it was over-hyped, or made the mistake of going to the ones in South Louisiana while they were still around. The ones in Baton Rouge and St Martinville didn't taste like they got their ingredients from the same place as the ones by the camp.
I can say that begining in a few weeks the camp order will be a sweep the kitchen hold the anchovies, hog heaven with jalapenos, chicken ranchero with jalapenos, breadsticks with cheese sauce, small cinnamon sticks, and a small peach puddin pie will be a weekly order on Friday nights on the pass through the last town in. I enjoy that style and a brick oven style the best though. Not a huge fan of the pillowy crusts or cracker crusts that seem to be the main options in South Louisiana.

Flying Heart or Flying Tiger are both good brewpubs that offer brick-oven pizzas and other items. Cool places, but check on hours for Flying Tiger.
I would recommend those places or Enoch’s for lunch after the zoo. The zoo is fine and in pretty good shape right now, honestly. If that’s your thing, it’s worth the visit.
If you’re looking for eats near campus, Catahoulas or Fieldhouse would be my recs, good “gameday” places if that makes sense.
Postgame, I’d go for Johnnys Pizza on North 18th. Should be open later than most places. Even on Saturdays, the town starts to die off around 9.

Yeah by all means be sure to go by there BEFORE dark. The hooligans are out in full force after dark.

Louisville ave. Great burgers.
The best Johnnys location is on Warren drive in West Monroe.

I would skip the zoo. It has improved in the last couple of years, but still nothing to waste time on. Plus, you better be carrying some form of self protection, as it is located in probably the highest crime area in Northeast LA.

my hate for it comes from multiple angles.
A) it was entirely overhyped. If it hadnt had been hyped as much when I had it at first I might would have appreciated it a bit more, but its nowhere near as good as the credit it gets.
B) Every time I had to stay on campus for practice/meets during breaks (almost every break we had) we'd have it 2/3 times during the break. It go old FAST.
C) We always had the one by campus which I'm sure was on the bottom end of johnny's locations. I had one out in west monroe near well rd (dont remember the actual address) once and it was better but still not great.

Do not go to zoo. Hit Flying Tiger for pizza and beer. Waterfront is another good one.

Was gonna hate on this idea until I remembered Flying Tiger Brewery. Still Monroe is a hard pass for me.

Johnny's seems to be a fairly polarizing pizza parlor. The commercials were prolific during the espn+ broadcast of the USA-ULM baseball series last spring, and they depicted a visually appealing pizza. I started a thread on the food board about it and got responses ranging from "the best" to "&!$%ing (stinks)" amongst the 3 pages of replies. While I may turn out to be disappointed, I am resolved to experience it and decide for myself.
Having had Johnny's about 1.7 trillion times, be sure to order your own instead of eating from the buffet.

The reason for this is that the quality isn’t consistent between locations. The Baton Rouge location isn’t very good, but the Monroe one, which I believe is the original, is.
For example, Torchey’s in Houston is incredible. Torchey’s in Baton Rouge was disgusting.

Our current plan is to visit the zoo Saturday AM, catch some pregame refreshment at Waterfront Grill, then do a little walking tour of campus before the main event at 6 PM.
That's pretty much the all it has to offer. Have fun.

Nowadays, I hit up Mohawk Tavern and miss CuCoo’s.

I went to the one in Baton Rouge and never went back. I think it closed. That place sucked, and it's within a couple of miles of 3-4 better options too.
I didn't know it was a Monroe thing, but I couldn't bring myself to trying it again. It was that bad (Baton Rouge location).

I’m from Monroe (Booker T area)… if you getting there Friday night checkout a game at Carroll(my alma mater)… China chef on Winnsboro Road next to Mac’s… Southern Classic… Danken Trail… Cotton’s… Peking(although not as good as it once was)… Captain D’s…
I think the fair in town…

I went to Johnny’s last year when Chalmette had a playoff game at West Monroe… it was pretty good

Tailgate in the pecan grove.
Didn't they cut most of this down for parking for the medical school?
Waterfront Grill - The Rakhee shrimp appetizer might be the best dish in Monroe.
Doe's Eat Place on Washington - Excellent steaks. Hot tamales are legendary as well.
Enoch's - Great burgers, solid live music. The music can be a little quirky but probably more mainstream for a game night. Crowded though.

FYI-Johnnys sweep the kitchen comes standard with anchovies unless you tell them otherwise
