Norm hasn't had much commercial success because he gives absolutely zero fricks. Who cares if he's never had a blockbuster special, the Canuck sonofabitch is hilarious. He downplays his own intelligence to an absurd extent.

I would just prefer Norm Macdonald's career highlights be something more than a ESPY hosting gig and played out OJ jokes from 25 years ago. He is very talented, but that seems to be all everybody talks about.
The problem with Norm is he has absolutely no respect for authority whatsoever and gives them the middle finger constantly. The only reason Norm gets gigs is comedians are fricking crazy about him and they put their own neck on the line on his behalf. But this is what makes him fricking hilarious is he doesn’t give a frick about the rules. Executives hatred for him is why his career isn’t bigger. Dave Letterman recommended Norm to be his replacement and it’s clear from early on he was grooming him as such, but the executives weren’t going to do it.

"In his book, OJ said that he would have taken a bullet or jumped in front of a train for Nicole. That is some bad luck; when the one guy who would have done that for you kills you." - Norm MacDonald

Norm is hysterical. So dry and smart.

The Moth joke? His Letterman performances? The Dirty Johnny Joke?
His Conan appearances are incredible

Yeah OJ is really untouchable now
Maybe now, but back then? 75% of black people thought OJ was innocent, and now it’s down to like 25%. It’s really hard to have a comparison to OJ. The Rock would be the closest, but he wouldn’t have the race component. Maybe his frequent costar Kevin Hart.... but OJ was an enigma.

His standup is genius and it doesn’t even touch on OJ. Norm is the greatest. I’ve gotten to talk to him a few times and he is crazy.

And obviously the joke's were allowable since it happened.

Yet the only reason Norm was fired was because his white boss was OJ's golf buddy.

Conan: What’s your new movie called?
Lady Guest: Chairman of the Board.
Conan: Ohhhh, do something with that, you freak.
Norm: I get that board is spelled B O R E D.

Of course no Norm thread is complete without him burying this poor girl on said Conan appearance.
Norm is the GOAT
Edit: OML beat me to it

Would Norm McDonald’s OJ jokes be allowed in today’s culture?
They weren't allowed in the time he said them.

And the reason they weren't allowed in the time he said them? You guessed it...

McDonald has some great bits out there, but how come nobody ever talks about anything outside of the OJ jokes if he's a well of hilarity?
Because for a 10+ year run comedy shifted from well crafted jokes to shock and awe reality tv with undertones of Dane cook mixed in
