A lot of people who live in New Orleans don't like to get out of their bubble. I'm not driving to Metairie to watch a baseball game, I would attend random games if they were in the city proper and I could get there by bike or walking, though.

Who on earth wants to watch the Zephyrs? It's minor league baseball ...

Could build a stadium right off of canal

New Orleans at its current size will not get an MLB team. As others have said its all about local TV market and attendance and New Orleans just isn't big enough. St. Louis is considered a small market for the MLB. A city has to be huge like Chicago or LA to be able to handle the team because of day games and just the shear number of games played. With all of that said the Zephyrs having poor attendance hold no weight because it's a minor league team and its not really in the city.

Couldn't hold an amusement park.
Mlb team? lol

Would be sensible, especially if it's within easy walking distance of the various streetcar lines and the cbd stop on the proposed NOLA/BR passenger train.

Have you guys seen list of MiLB attendance? LINK
There are many smaller markets than New Orleans metro that have teams outdrawing the Zephyrs. And plenty even AA or A teams.
Also, if people in metairie / northshore (which market as a whole needs) aren't going to games now, they likely aren't going to start being regulars because a stadium is downtown.

No. Baseball takes more resources to support than any other professional sport. Mexico City and Montreal are the next two cities rumored to get a team. The cities next in line would be Nashville, San Antonio, and Charlotte.

Considering that the Saints are 331–418–5 all time, their overall attendance figures show that they have had great fan support over the years.
Now if you went to the actual games, you'd know this isn't true. BeeFense has been spot on.
It really came to be obvious after Katrina. You could basically find a season ticket anywhere in the stadium, it took drafting Reggie Bush & lowering ticket prices to actually get people back in the dome.
The Ditka years and the few before that were the low point. Place was empty
Haslett years came with a lot of indifference. To say the Dome was consistently packed would be a lie, even when the product was 10x better than what it had been in a decade. 2000 was fun & memorable but the rest of the Haslett years were defined by lowlights

I'm not saying it would definitely be the case but I don't think increased attendance is unreasonable at all with a relocation. There's an article from 2 years ago talking about Charlottes move from 20 minutes away in SC to downtown Charlotte. The move doubled their attendance to put them at the top of the list. If you put a stadium somewhere downtown where people can get their easily and safely on foot I don't see how attendance wouldn't significantly improve from the current setup of sitting in that terrible traffic on Airline. I think the other problem though is the Marlins are a joke of an organization with a terrible front office. Their farm system doesn't exactly draw excitement like top tier organizations do.

I think the Zephyrs would pull in a lot more fans with a better located stadium.
Most of the Minors games I've been to have been because the stadium is in a convenient spot like in Memphis.

f it was downtown, absolutely. I know, big if.
ETA: just like I think the Zephrys would have a good following if they were downtown. Location location location.
I always wished they would knock down the iberville housing projects down and build a stadium there. It would be awesome catching a ball game then strolling into the FQ.

It takes 10-15 mins to get from downtown to Zephyrs Field thanks to Earhart. It's in a decent part of town and convenient to get to from almost anywhere in the city without having to battle downtown and parking. Lack of attendance has nothing to do with "location".
I completely disagree with this. Maybe on the weekends, but when first pitch is at 6 or 7 pm on a weekday it can take > 45 min to get there. I used to go to a ton of Zephyrs games back in the day and Earhart is a huge clusterfrick a lot of the time.

Hmmm, even in the 90s when they sucked I remember there not being an empty seat in the dome.

Correct. It happened a lot. Some company at the last minute would swoop in, buy 3k tickets or whatever the amount was, and the game would be on tv.

I didn't read all 7 pages of this thread, but the reason why the Z's are struggling with attendance are:
1) The Marlins have a terrible farm system and are generally a terribly run club. Yet we keep sticking with them.
Amazingly, when we were part of the Astros system and actually had good players, we had no problem packing 5K a weekday game and 8-9K a weekend game, with occasional 10K.
2) For the last several years, the ownership of the Z's was a joke, the stadium needed improvements, there was little to no promotion of the team, etc. Now, a new ownership group has taken over, but it seems like they are waiting for all this new team name crap to happen before they really start pushing it. I would expect next season, there would be a huge push to get people out to the park.
