So I'm a first year teacher/coach and I'm coaching junior boys basketball. I never played basketball, watched it growing up but dont understand a whole lot about the game from a strategy and technical standpoint we just run the same plays and do the same drills as senior high. My question Is though if I'm playing a team that's in Man and we are running a motion offense should my screener try to pin his guy and spin to the basket or would he sandwich the guy hes screening for who is curling? I would think one guy go to one block the other guy to the opposite block but when I've tried it in our first 2 games it hasn't worked. Idk if it's the gameplan or if they just arent executing. Sorry for the wall of text

Eta: I'm mainly talking about off ball screens

The pick and roll?

You can run a slip, roll, or pick and pop off of a screen

Off ball the screener should not roll to the basket. He should just replace the guy he just screened for on the perimeter.

No shite. We scored less than 35 points last night because I'm coaching a bunch of 5'4 white boys who think they shoot like steph and refuse to attack the basket.

But if they switch why should he not roll since he is between the basket and his man. Wouldn't that be an easy layup?

I played in college. I remember in middle school we ran a basic 4-out 1-in motion offense. It’s a basic pass and screen away offense like this:

Very simple for the players to understand. And we only lost twice during my middle school years running that basic offense. It comes down to your players being able to make plays and make easy shots.

It’s similar to a read option in football. They should expect their coach to be able to tell them when to roll and when to fade. It’s not rocket science. Lane open, roll. Lane jammed up, fade and don’t clog it anymore (reset the formation after kicking to the top of the key and live to fight another day).

I’m not clear on what you are asking. If a player is curling on a screen to go to the basket off the ball, you wouldn’t want the screener to also roll to the basket. You’d have two guys in the lane... unless I misunderstand what you’re asking...

Like middle school? Just teach them to make free throws and layups. Run the shite out of them at practice and press non stop.

Run the picket fence, just don't get caught watching the paint dry.

Ball up (top of the key), screen down. Ball to the side (wing) screen away. Only roll on on the ball screens.
