If you’re going to pay more than $750/month and you’re comfortable always having a note, you should be leasing. You don’t have to put more than a few grand down, sometimes less or even nothing at all, and you’re not eating all the deprecation. On top of that you can get a new car every 3 years.

There is certainly a cutoff where a state would consider you a resident, typically 184 days (though some states are stricter than others). As a California resident, for example, you are taxed on all income. As a nonresident working in California, you are only taxed on income from California sources. I believe there is a part-time resident status for CA as well, but I've never had to worry about the minutiae as I work 14 or less days in states outside of my home state, and never have established a permanent residence.

California typically considers you a resident after 9 months spent working in state in a given tax year. But it's nothing written in stone.

Many factors come into play.

How many days worked in state that year, now many trips taken back to your 'home' state and the duration all are factors. They like to see at least a trip every two or three months back home, of moderate duration at least.

Once they get you in their grasp, it's a PITA to get out of it. You have to have a strategy and stick to it.

I just had a long talk with my tax accountant two weeks ago about this very subject, and that's the main impetus to pull the pin when I am. Although. I researched it pretty well on my own before I ever came out here in 2016 and I know when the year starts what I need to do.

There are thousands of people doing the same as me and a large pool to get a wealth of info from. I come from a family of bookkeepers and accountants and had a lot of good advice when I was coming up and (mostly ) the sense enough to listen to both them and other people I'd worked with in the past that came out here before me. I wasn't just flying blind by any means.
There's a real brotherhood to this shite I do that really helps out. The foreman is a local hand that treats us well. They really appreciate the travelers in this local. We make it easy for them to retain and grow market share.

Caught another good call several months back and am loving it. Can't beat a contractor that has good conditions and works a lot of overtime.

At the same time, I love not working. It's nice to spend a lot of time not at work after putting in so much overtime for so long a stretch.

Color me shocked, but it's Louisiana that's causing me headaches. Something is going on at the Dept of Revenue this year. They're flagging stuff for even more bogus reasons than usual. It's almost as if they're hoping that they'll sling a bunch of crap at some taxpayers in hopes that some will just not bother fighting them and fork over what they ask for without question. In my case they're denying the credit you get against Louisiana taxes from taxes you paid another state. I've spent a lot of time talking to various people in the Dept and their story keeps changing. Even getting a written copy of their determination has been a fiasco. By that I mean not just a bill but the specific portion of the tax law they're referencing. It's a piddling amount they're trifling with. 700 bucks.
But I'm in the right and I know it and the aggravation of dealing with the numbskulls at the LDR from 2200 miles away is making me see red.

That introduction for the new Vette started out so horribly. Thankfully the quality of the car itself made you forget about that abortion of an intro. Hope they have some different exterior color options in 2022 than they do now.

I have always paid cash for my vehicles and the most expensive I’ve ever bought is my current truck ($15,000). Cheapest was a small car I bought for $1500 and drove it for 5 years, no issues.

I could afford a new car, but just think it’s absolutely insane to spend that amount of money on a vehicle.

If a 500 dollar note breaks you or remotely puts you in a bind, you need a better job.

And if I can get less than 2% interest, which is likely, I would be dumb as shite to not finance the vehicle for as long as they will let me.
