I think Gardere is getting better. I only remember one murder being in the news last year.

Meanwhile, I tried taking a short cut to Dalrymple through the Bottom during heavy traffic one afternoon.. Ended up in a field at the end of east Polk Street. There were drug dealers on every other corner and I was getting eyed down like I raped their sister. I legit thought I was about to get gunned down in broad daylight. No thanks.

If they are wearing mostly red be sure to say "What up Cuz" and they will leave you be. If they are wearing mostly blue, say "What up Blood" and they will leave you be.

generally you can look at a city on Google maps and use lot sizes to get an idea of which neighborhoods are bad. Places built for low incomes will have really small yards and be away from most services.

When you look at North BR on thing that stands out right away is the almost uniform small lot size, that grows substantially when you get south of Florida.

Other areas in the North like Glen Oaks and Greenwell are in the process of going bad.

That fence is ridiculous but you can't blame them for wanting to separate from all the empty warehouses and hobos.

If you aren't buying drugs you won't have a problem....but most of it is a bad area. During the day not much to worry about.

I grew up in NBR and we had a huge backyard so the small lot size isn't necessarily true.

I cut through the Bottom to find free or cheap parking on game day and my wife thinks I'm insane. I know those streets all to well, I saw some crazy stuff on them when I was a teenager. Probably the stupidest place I have been after Iraq.

Before the hurricane we went to a Saints game, and parked on Earhart in front of the Calliope projects, we started talking to an old lady on the porch and she was nice as hell. She said "I'll make sure no one messes with your car"

Came back later that night after the usual after game drinking and cab ride. Car was there untouched, lady was still outside, and the streets were lined with broken glass.

So now I make it a habit to engage and talk to people in these areas. A simple "how are you" eye contact, and a wave.
Seems like it can't hurt.
I'm sure one day I'll have the bad luck that happens to everyone in NOLA.

It's a rule of thumb, but not like an actual binding rule. Sure some houses in NBR have huge lots.

But google earth bad areas of NOLA and BR and the tiny lots in the ghetto do stand out.

What they are calling the dead presidents is actually the bottom. Another bad place. I got my windshield shot out in broad daylight Zion city. I always hated brookstown.

So your're saying I won't get shot or robbed even if I look like the typical murder victim....

Yea buddy. My solved murder is on there.

Dat 11580 Perkins wut wut.
Crime Map

And I'll be damned. Seems Gardere only had 2 murders in 2013 even if one(Ridge Pecan) isn't showing up as a pin on the map, it's on the list.
