Blows my mind how many people would make their day to day life significantly shittier for not that much more money.
I realize that this doesnt apply to those of us on this board, since we're all making north of 500k, but to many, an extra $1000+ a month could represent a significant upgrade to quality of life. that's a new truck note and a few tanks of gas.

17% is not remotely close to enough to make 8-10 hours of every single working day noticeably shittier.
What are you doing in there that would make it noticeably shittier?
I am in a cube now and it is good sized, has tall walls, closing door. It's just open at the top. You can hear conversations and what's going on around you, but I wouldn’t say it's noticeably shittier.

I’d have taken the job with the most upside. I would have wanted a path to big money. I’m too old for any of that to matter now, though.

If this ain’t a microcosm of tOT or the south in general idk what is
Feel free to spend that money on a depreciating asset that you spend 5 or hours a week driving. I’ll spend it on the office I work 40+ hours a week out of.

Go with the most stable employer and the job the gives the most long range upward mobility.

your point is equally valid, i'm not saying it isnt. i'm just saying that different people have different priorities.
besides, i just used that as an example. spending the money on a depreciating asset is at least somethign you own vice an office that has zero monetary value.

I have absolutely no experience in this, but my wife has worked in both situations and she'll take a private office any day, all day over a cubicle.
And if I did find myself in a similar situation, I know for sure I'd rather a private office.
Something about a cubicle would make me feel like a hamster on a spinning wheel in a cage.

I'm taking option B Not being bothered by other people is worth the 15k to me.
Same same .
Then again, ive been remote since 2007 so no company that wanted me to ever come into an office could afford to pay me the amount i would require to share a bathroom with a bunch of trashy coworkers, and to put up with office politics/water-cooler BS .

Is this question really ‘work harder for less money or work less for more money”?
Posted on 1/3/24 at 5:27 pm to threeputtforbogie
Apparently a lot of folks that make 100k in a cubicle would accept a 15k annual pay cut that comes with more work and an office with a door. Seems strange to me. Actually faced with this choice in the real world, I doubt they would be so quick to make that choice. Hypothetically, it’s much easier to pretend they are so willing to sacrifice 15% of their pay for more work and little more privacy.

The more work is a perk, not a minus.
You understand how shitty it is to work a useless job where you spend the vast majority of your day clock watching and trying to look busy while not doing anything?
After a week you’re bored out of your mind and miserable.
Oh and you have to actually try to look busy because you’re in a fricking cube.

If they’re only paying 85k for a job that warrants a private office, it sounds like a cheap company. Unless there is significant upside with the 85k job.

Never had a cubicle.
Won’t ever have a cubicle.
Won’t ever ask someone to work in a cubicle.
Seems pretty dehumanizing.
I guess I’d give up the money in the OP’s scenario.

reading this thread it dawns on me that from my very first day as an office building employee I’ve always had a private office. Since I was 22 years old.
so I’ve never had a cubicle, but I’ve never worked anywhere that HAD cubicles

Office all day every day
Imagine working in a cubicle next to a stander
