If your job has transitioned to you working from home,

How did the transition go?

Are you more or less efficient?

Has your compensation been affected? How?

What do you enjoy about working from home?

What’s been the biggest challenge?

What is your company telling you about timelines for returning to pre ‘Rona normalcy?

Which changes could stick around once this is all over?

I’m way less productive — too many other distractions and other things to do.

I have zero timeline for being allowed back in. I’ve asked and was told “higher ups aren’t ready”.

I’m actually working less hours which sucks as I’m contract.

I could see them telling me to do it forever.

Yes here in Malaysia. Office is not open and probably won't be until September earliest. My office in Houston was eliminated. They packed my stuff and sent it to my house. No more offices there for anyone except senior management. If you need to come in on occasion then you book a desk.

I think I am less efficient but I enjoy the freedom. I can watch TV or listen to music/pod casts or run an errand. Miss interacting with my colleagues. Miss having a really good printer too.

I worked from home before Covid. People always question how I can be productive. Well if I am not I lose me job. I get more done at home than in an office.

Working from home is great. But it takes a particular personality that is self motivated.

No commute so less gas cost and more relaxed mornings.
A/C and music is set how you want it.
Lunches are so much healthier and cheaper.
Home office gets itemized.
Fido gets all his walks in before it’s time to pour a whiskey.
Easier to fit in that workout.
Get laid at work.

Stopped wearing pants.

Gained 15 pounds.

Realized I could not fit in old pants.

Gave up on pants all together.

Stopped going outside due to lack of pants and fear of Covid.

Diet now entirely consists of Uber eats. Gained another 25 pounds.

Finally had a tinder date who accused me of catfishing her.

Joined 4chan. Became more outspoken on political views during work zoom meetings.

BLM protests occurred. Got fired from job over Facebook post.

Moved into parents basement. Have not showered in 2 weeks.

It has worked out very well for me. Only thing lost is the free food we'd get at the office occasionally and the coffee.

Thing I like is: not having to wait for the slow arse elevator at my office. Hanging out with my dog and blasting my music without headphones on is a big plus.

Biggest challenge: was non-work related challenges ( dog getting sick ). That would've been a challenge even without Kung Flu.

Well. (ETA: I should say there were some technological issues at first - the infrastructure was already there for most of it, but the organization had to jump through some hoops for some aspects of the work.)

Are you more or less efficient?

Somewhat more productive - just not having to set up in the morning then pack up in the afternoon, bathroom breaks take 30 seconds now.

quote:

Has your compensation been affected? How?

No effect on compensation.

What do you enjoy about working from home?

I enjoy no commute, no getting dressed, no hauling food/groceries in and out, lunch out of the fridge at home.

quote:

What’s been the biggest challenge?

No career-altering challenges (I was already teleworking about 50% of the time) - just one particular aspect of my job was much easier and smoother at the office, but is getting better over time.

quote:

What is your company telling you about timelines for returning to pre ‘Rona normalcy?

No expectations, but maybe back in the office September or October, tentatively.

Rethinking of teleworking as the "norm" for more folks. Organization is bipolar about it - shrink the footprint one day, clawing back telework options the next. Because of my position that doesn't affect me too much, but some workgroups have been ping-ponged a bit on this issue lately.

It’s my new normal and I doubt I’ll ever go back to an office. Saves me a 30 mile commute.

Also great to not be on the road - went from 50% international travel to zero.

I suppose I should answer my own questions,

Transition was rocky at first. The decision was made after the close of business on a Monday to go fully remote the next morning, and the technology simply wasn’t in place. Very frustrating for the first few weeks.

Efficiency has improved. I’m used to traveling, so not driving/flying 15-20 hours per week listening to podcasts has freed up a ton of time.

More efficiency as noted above has led to more work volume, which will lead to more $$$

Not traveling has been great for family time, don’t have to dress up, can jump in the pool with kids at lunch, etc.

Challenges are distractions

We’re being told that we’ll be completely remote for the rest of the year and then we’ll see

Im fine with the lunchtime pool dips sticking around post ‘Rona!

I did it for 10 weeks and it's not for me either. Not full time at least. I could do it maybe 2 days per week or something like that. I've been back in the office 3 days per week for a month or so now.

I helped implement it, so it went pretty smooth

Way more efficient, I wish we could go to 100% wfh forever

Compensation hasn't been affected at all, in fact I got a raise during all of it

More time with family, less time on pointless commutes, more efficient use of my time

Enjoy just about everything, and I'm an extrovert

Biggest challenge has been old school asshats thinking wfh isn't working... even though it's been proven time and time again to be MORE efficient

We are transitioning back to onsite again now: but we are in the process of creating a company policy that will allow work from home if you want it from now on (with some stipulations)

The two other people on my “team” live within a few miles of me. We kinda alternate working from our own home or rotating between meeting at one of our homes while markets are open. Office gals all have toddlers and love working remote. We’re not renewing the office lease, sticking with this model. It was pretty dumb that my coworkers lived a few neighborhoods over and we commuted 30 minutes. We only have 7 people in our office tho

Also work 6-7 hours instead of 9 and get the same amount done. I’m not wasting time writing commentary to waste time and look productive till 5 pm that coworkers won’t read or already know

I can work from home wondrously between 5-7am. Soon as my children and wife wake up, I hit the 40min commute and work in my coworking space private office. Can’t imagine working from home all day, at least with a family.
