I worked for a Fabrication company. When we worked nights it was $1 more and hour and they paid us through lunch.

There are major perks to it. You don't have to deal with the paper pushers during the day.

Born and raised in Louisiana and have never heard of not getting “night pay”.
The machine shop where I worked offered $3.00 per hour for nights.
They had to rotate the crews because some people wanted to work straight nights.
I would think night pay is a common practice.

Not exactly. There are long dark nights right now. Twighlight isn’t the most daylight they get in the winter.
Summer time twighlight is the darkest it gets.

We pay our night workers $3/hour more and they get to work 4x10 schedule.

That would take more getting used to than anything for me.
This is not at all true

I’ve always enjoyed working the night shift
I love the feeling of my day being over while the rest of society begins theirs
Being a night owl does help though

Most guys I know that work nights get around a 10% bump in salary for it.

It's amazing how there are no jobs available during the day.
Thanks Trump

I like it when I get there, not when I get home. Jet lag like a motherfricker.

That would have been nice.

Everywhere I worked gave a shift differential.
Think it was 10% for second shift and 15% for thirds.
I made it six months on third before I went back to days. I was nodding on way home said it wasn't worth it.
If I didn't have children I could work second shift though. But missing all their games sucked so I stick with 1st shift.

Yes, working nights blows.
In Winter, you go in when it's dark, come out and it's still dark. YOu miss everything that is going on, especially professional sports wise, etc.
Did that shite for Chrysler for almost 10 years, i hated it.

I worked straight nights (12 hr.) shifts for a little over a year.I felt like crap the whole time.I would do fine until 2am and then it was a struggle until I got off at 7am.About every other morning I would doze off and run off the shoulder of the road, don’t know how I didn’t get in a wreck.I would sleep good for 7 hours but when I woke up I felt as if I hadn’t slept at all. Most miserable year of my life.

I worked 16 years on nights as a nurse(4 of those in Louisiana). Always got extra night shift pay. Usually around an extra 18% of my base rate for nights and 8-10% of my base rate for weekends. So an extra 25% or so more when I worked weekend nights.
It took a toll on my body though. Got to where I wasn’t sleeping good. Was tired all the time no matter how much sleep I got. Was falling asleep at red lights on a regular basis on my drive home from work in the morning. Only a matter of time before I fell asleep while driving and not just at red lights and killed myself or someone else from a car accident. So I found another nursing job that let me work regular set daytime hours.
We can be fired on the spot if we are caught taking a nap at work (even on our own break time). Can also be fired if we decide to take a quick 10 min nap in our car in the parking lot at work before we go home so we don’t fall asleep at red lights.
You are working the wrong type of job if they aren’t paying night shift more money.
