As confusing as this sounds if it involves a fresh coat of pavement on that whole stretch I’m for it
The good news is they're going to resurface the entire street first.
Then it really is only a matter of painting it.
Once they realize the CATS buses issue are an insurmountable problem they can just repaint the damn thing.

Nahbrah. It's because those idiots really think people are going to want to use North and North deadends at ...Foster.
With proper signage it will work. Jefferson into town is two left turn lanes onto Government. You can continue that two lane flow to a right turn onto foster then a left onto North.
And anyone who acts like Government isn’t already a two lane road with a middle turn lane doesn’t drive it enough. The inside lane in both directions is already just cars stopped waiting to turn left. With people flying around them at the last minute to avoid a rear end accident.

As someone who took Government from Jefferson to Downtown and back every day for a year, this will be a good thing.
Government traffic is only bad for 2 reasons, BRCC and people who take a left turn in the left lane. I cannot tell you how many times I have come to a complete stop on Government in free-flowing traffic just because the guy in front of me is taking a left turn. Not to mention the how dangerous it makes everything when everybody then tries to merge into the right lane at the same time. Government st right now is a breeding ground for accidents.
This road diet won't speed up your drive time, but it definitely won't make it much worse. It will make your drive much safer, it will make the area much more conducive to biking/walking, and the businesses will be better off.
If Government is ever going to reach its potential as a cool, fun area of town, it needs to not be a 4 lane highway that breeds accidents. Have you ever been on Magazine st in NOLA and bitched about the traffic? No, because you generally recognize that street is not a street you should use to fly home after work.
This is a step in the right direction for BR, now lets just get it done within the time frame laid out.

Truthfully, that’s my major complaint. They don’t need a stop every block and there should have been turnouts every 5 or so blocks.
They can work them into the bike lanes, though. It’s been done before in other cities with this type of situation.

quote:staring was a basic 2-lane road that was expanded. completely different situation. like lsuboo said, there are turn lanes at every intersection along staring. government has no dedicated lefts, is not a 2-lane road, and the right-of-way along it is infinitely more expensive...so expensive, that it's not feasible to widen along government like it was on staring.
if this is so brilliant, why didn't they do it to staring lane a few years back?
they're doing what they believe is the best improvement within the footprint of the existing right-of-way, and the big sell is a large safety improvement with equal or minimal added delay. on top of that, the bike paths and sidewalks fit the urbanized section of government.
i really don't believe they would take a lane away if there weren't tons of evidence that it can work or works elsewhere.

It's not about what you call it its about what Government Street became, a state highway. A truck route. That's my point. It's not just another street on the grid.
It was built as a “truck route” it’s changed since then...

Right, I don't see what's so difficult about this.
Having the buses stop in the only lane would be a terrible idea, but having them stop in the bus lane so traffic can pass... easy enough solution.
Since no property owner in their right mind is going to just give up a piece of their land for a dedicated bus turnout.

bullshite. You also have transit buses and school parents stopping in the right lane. As well as people who come to a complete stop before turning right.
Every morning I'm constantly switching lanes on Government to avoid getting stuck behind someone. This is insane.

You do realize that when a guy wants to take a right hand turn now, there won't be a left lame available to go around that person?
Right turn cars turning into some of those small side streets and most of those small retail shops slow almost to a stop before turning. You will have to stop for them.
Those people and the buses.

73 to the River Center is still a state highway right? I know its going to be changed, but it hasn't yet has it?

The buses are going to be a problem, I agree with that. I think they will find an alternate route for them soon though.
Right hand turning cars are completely different animal than left turn. You won't be able to fly down Government going 45 anymore, but thats because it isn't supposed to be that kind of street anymore. Overall you will just be driving much slower, but will come to far fewer complete stops.

Left tun goes into the turn lane. Right turn shouldn't be a big issue.

Watch when cars trying to turn right into some of those small businesses around BRHS slows traffic down. That and the busses will be s problem.
Hopefully the plan includes right turn lanes on secondary arteries like Eugene, Park Blvd./19th., 22nd, etc.
That will help.

SO there are 2 congested lanes in each direction, you will remove one in each direction to create a center turn lane and then add bike paths. How does this actually help the situation? All this is, is a bunch of pandering to the insane cyclist community (all 17 that ride government st.) some home-schoolers and a bunch of people who wish they lived in Europe. In the end they f@#! Florida blvd. more as that is where the traffic will go and create two E_W parking lots in the afternoon so some granola eating, merlot slurping half-socialist can celebrate their progressive road that they don't drive on, because they walk to their job at the boutique.

I live in the road diet area, voted for trump, drink beer, drive to work via Government street in a truck, and think granola tastes like shite.
Oh, and I’m fine with the project because I went to the meetings, looked through the plans, talked with the design team, etc. instead of reading an advocate article about it.

That is a quality rant, right there.
