Government Street road diet
LINK
After years on the drawing board, the Government Street road diet finally has a groundbreaking date.
City and local officials met with contractors Wednesday morning and agreed to begin construction Jan. 8, said Fred Raiford, the city-parish director of transportation and drainage.
quote:
The road diet is intended to slim the four-lane thoroughfare to three lanes — two travel lanes and a center turning lane — along most of its stretch between Interstate 110 and Lobdell Boulevard. The portion between North Foster and Jefferson will remain four lanes. There will also be a new roundabout at the juncture of Government and Lobdell.
Trimming the road is intended to allow space for sidewalks, bike lanes and trees.

When work on the road diet begins, crews will start by removing asphalt along the outside lanes near downtown, and construction will move along from west to east, Raiford said. The project is scheduled to last 380 contractor days, or about a year and a half of total time, he said.

I really, really dislike the term "road diet".

This is going to a clusterfrick of epic proportions, the likes of which Baton Rouge has never seen

Other than the roundabout at Government and Lobdell, this is going to be a disaster even by Baton Rouge standards.

A roundabout should go over great right there
A trial attorney should build an office next to it

Multiply that by a factor of retard and this project will be completed by summer of 2020.

Construction is going to suck (and will probably take 45 years), but I think the pedestrian, parking, and turn lane improvements will be a very good thing for that area.

You cant be serious...what assclown at the city thinks this is a great idea?

Translation, we will keep this section 4 lanes to better handle the impending traffic bottleneck thats about to happen from the complete frick up by our inept staff for approving such an idiotic "road diet" plan by taking away two travel lanes on a high traffic hwy.

BR traffic is glowing so well its time to shrink the roads.
Government Street is the second longest East West road that serves downtown. It is a state highway and will be "demoted".
Traffic from the Broadmoor area, Jefferson Hwy. area, Goodwood, etc. could use it to drive to Downtown BR in lieu of the interstate. Now they want to shrink it.
If they wanted to build a nice East/West avenue serving downtown why not use Convention Street or one of the lesser streets for their "experiment"?
Why use one of the two more prominent streets?
It's a crazy experiment, but this is how BR rolls. A handful of people concoct a scheme like this and next thing you know it moves forward.

Well this is fricking dumb.

This is going to be a fricking disaster.

The two middle lanes are essentially already turn lanes, so I don't see the road losing much or any capacity. The bus thing is bad, but hopefully that can get added in. They also need to do roundabouts at Foster, Acadian, Park, and Jefferson.

It will make getaways more difficult for the criminals

Going from 2 to 1 lane in each direction is going to make getting to the turn lane take forever. And even when traffic is relatively light you'll be stuck behind a jalopy going 20-under.

and a center turning lane
How many head on collisions per day we talking here from people turning left or pulling out to merge? I see it a fair amount on Jefferson HWY by Essen now.

Traffic will be shite going towards downtown from Foster and eastward. Shouldn't be too bad the other direction as many times people turning left in the lane clog up the roads already. Wrecks will certainly affect it more. I'm not sure how I feel about this.
It'd be nice if it were convention instead for sure.

Because traffic is so light in BR it's time to shrink roads.
