North would have been perfect since it doesn't go all the way to Jefferson.
They are keeping it 4 lanes between Jefferson and Foster according to the article - and that traffic will have a dedicated right turn onto Foster now.

Or use North like I have been for years.
North is actually a pretty quick drive especially after they built the overpass.

Raiford said authorities are investigating whether any property owners might sell or donate land where buses can pull off the road to load and unload passengers.
I'm investigating wether Paige Spiranac will sex with me. I have a better chance than owners chopping up their limited parking lots for bus cutouts. The buses will make this an epic clusterfack. It astounds me these nitwits are going forward with no solution to the bus issue.

The Jefferson Highway/Government Street corridor (La. 73) was developed over the years, and has become a high volume route from the east and southeast part of the city into mid-city/downtown.
It's a state highway. Now I know the state is going to give it back, but it was established as a highway for a reason.
The businesses built on this thoroughfare were built there for a reason, its a high traffic route and it is easily connected via Goodwood/Lobdell, Jefferson, College/Foster, etc.
It's kind of like Perkins Road but actually goes all the way to the river instead of stopping at Park Blvd. You wouldn't downsize Perkins would you to help those businesses, so why downsize Govt?

Most of Perkins Road already has a center turn lane.

And the winner of the best way to throw taxpayers money away for street improvements in BTR goes to...

Dumb. Major east west route in a sea of infrastructure dysfunction. This city is brain dead. Can you imagine what actual good that money could do?

This is going to be like the ramp meters. It will confuse people in Livingston Parish, but it will actually help a bit.
I do agree that they need to let the buses pull into the bike lanes at the bus stops though.

Florida Street and North Blvd aren't getting any modifications. Drive fast on those streets.
Jefferson doesn't connect to either of those. That's where a large portion of the current traffic on Government goes.
If you are headed North on Jefferson, make a left onto Claycut, right onto Foster, and then left onto North Blvd. or Florida. I do this every time now because Government St. sucks balls getting to downtown compared to North Blvd.
It would be nice if Jefferson could continue to Florida, but that's a lot of houses to eminent domain.

Is there a center lane from College to the RR overpass? That's a dense commercial area. Would you want to put that part on a diet? I wouldn't.

Yes, there is a center turn lane on Perkins between College and the Dalrymple exit.

And they have a center turn lane.

And with Government going on a diet, that's what more cars and trucks will do. The road diet for Government will impact the traffic grid negatively elsewhere. Claycut is a prime example. Old Good is too. Maybe even Broussard, Eugene and some others.

Almost all the way to the overpass... there is a center lane from College to the I-10 ramp.
From there it's only two lanes, can't put that on a diet unless you make it one way.

That's the entire goal. North Blvd. has plenty of capacity.

But Claycut, Broussard, Old Goodwood, Foster, etc. Do not.
If North Blvd. is an easy alternative, why don't vehicles use it more now, but instead use Florida and Government Streets. There is a reason and its not because people are dumb. Most like you explore and find the best options for them.

So the solution is to redirect Government traffic onto residential Claycut? Seems counterproductive. Funny though, since so many in Capital Heights mindlessly support this road diet.

Thanks, I left Capital Heights off my list. It will be impacted too.

You could just as easily make the left on Government and then a right onto Foster since that stretch is staying 4 lanes... I just prefer taking Claycut.

Yes it does. That's what government Street needs, but there's not enough space. Gotcha.
Is there some place you can find accident rates?
Are there more accidents on Government are on Perkins west of College? It would be an interesting comparison.

There is. And it would suck without one.
