Australia-based Woodside Energy Group has reached a $17.5 billion final investment decision on its liquefied natural gas production and export facility in Lake Charles.

Officials announced the news on Monday. The facility, called Louisiana LNG, is the largest foreign direct investment in Louisiana history.

“Woodside’s decision to invest in Louisiana is an unmistakable signal to the world that we have what it takes to continue our legacy of powering the globe,” a statement from Gov. Jeff Landry reads.

Once operational in 2029, Louisiana LNG will produce up to 16.5 million metric tons of LNG per year. The project is expected to support “thousands” of construction jobs during the development phase and thousands more direct new jobs once the facility is up and running, according to Louisiana Economic Development.

Woodside’s final investment decision comes on the heels of two other major project announcements in Louisiana: Meta’s $10 billion AI data center in Richland Parish and Hyundai’s $5.8 billion steel plant in Ascension Parish.

Great news. Here's a good Reuters article on some recent Louisiana wins. LINK

Louisiana has long been overshadowed by its more showy neighbor Texas, which boasts a larger economy and population and has for decades wielded greater sway among policymakers in Washington DC and on the world stage.

But the Bayou State is staging a revival that could see it emerge as the more dynamic and influential Gulf Coast hub over the coming decades, thanks to a development blueprint that could be described as being all things to all people

Louisiana has been killing it lately on the industrial / manufacturing front.

Hopefully the state keeps up the momentum.

I dislike these articles because Louisiana should thrive no matter what.

If greed and corruption didnt rule the land it would be the per capita leader in production I believe. Its got farmland, O&G, Ports, and savages that can work these jobs and want to.

How many of these projects actually get built and start running and hiring people though. I remember a lot of big projects being announced during the Jindal and Edwards administrations and maybe half of them actually got started much less procured funding and started hiring people.

LC labor market might be one of the strongest for its relative size.

All the LNG is fighting to death for qualified people.

And we talking serious money for skilled labor during these construction phases.

Go drive the coast and see… most of the ones in LC that were announced were built. The methanex carbon capture thing is the only one I can think of that didn’t happen. It did get a good chunk of funding that was spent on site work however.

Its amazing Lake Charles remains so shitty with how much money has been spent in a very small radius around the city. I know, hurricanes, but its still pretty wild.
