Given the situation there were clearly more prudent ways of protecting the child than stomping a mud hole in granny. The only motivation you really have to physically attack the old lady is that you want vengeance. You aren't concerned with protecting your child at the point when you throw your kid into the middle of a fight. You are concerned with getting yours.
