Have swum in Mississippi. Up by Carville, years ago. Took a dare to try and cross. 50 yards out that river becomes a different beast. No forward progress, all you can see is how fast you are passing downstream from the other bank. Weird eddies and water changing speed and temps. When you let your legs sink a little to rest you have to fight an enormous force to start kicking again. As hard as swimming in constant ocean waves.
Never gladder to surrender a bet.

If any part of the Algiers story is true, then maybe "person" had some sort of propellor device.

I never swam it but played in it as a teen growing up in Algiers. Nothing like shotgunning beers and playing on the rope swing.

This sounds like a word problem from junior high math class.. Not sure which formula to use, but someone smarter than me could probably back into determining the water current and swimmer's speed with the information provided.

NOPD has declared it a hoax because they didn’t see anyone when they showed up 16 hrs later after the first of 100 911 calls were made.

Also, remember that the water is totally toxic. It's more like sludgy poison from the smoke-belching factories at the top of the river, swirled together with the pesticide and fertilizer run-off from farms in the Mississippi River watershed... it's a funky, nasty brew. That does not seem like a good idea to dunk yourself in.

I had several nice cool handfuls of river water down in Venice years ago. It was refreshing to say the least. It was either drink some river water, or walk back through the marsh about a mile to get my water that i left like a dumbass, in August. I didn't die, or get sick.

That post I took as a joke.

The river is one of the cleanest bodies of water in the state

Yeah this definitely did not happen.

Why don't y'all believe this? A strong swimmer can do this.

Totally believable IMO, even with a high river. Probably freezing cold though.

If you were going to swim that bend, that would be the way to go. Let the current help and get to the inner side of the bend as fast as possible where it is much slower.

Would be impressive if true.

"Woman swims across the Mississippi River from Aquarium to Algiers Point
No way in hell she swam a line like that with the current."

When I was 15 I swam across the Red River in Shreveport with a very mild current. I regret it to this day. I landed 2 miles down stream and had to rest then swim back and walk 4 freaking miles back to my sisters house.

Anyone remember this...?

Italian Vanna White..

Police are treating the investigation as a missing persons case, but have suggested she may have drowned in the Mississippi. A security guard at the Aquarium of the Americas reported that on Jan. 6, he saw a woman fitting Carrisi's description leap into the deep and swift river and vanish beneath the surface.
