No way in hell she swam a line like that with the current.

I doubt it was a straight line. She may have entered and exited the river at those points, but to draw a straight line is dumb.

jeez, they're just showing the general path she took, it's not like she had a GPS strapped to her arse for tracking the exact track she made

Who said anything about it being illegal?

The NOPD called the Coast Guard...because they are there to protect and serve...

maybe they wanted to make sure she was okay

When my father was at Holy Cross they would swim out to meet the banana boats. They would hang on the the bunches of bananas as flotation and swim back. I don't think they ever swam all the way across. This was in the 30s

According to Google Maps the distance from her starting to end point is about 0.5 miles (2,600 ft). If she planned to swim directly across the river, the distance is about 2,100 ft, thus the current carried her an extra 500 feet in distance (hypotenuse of the triangle), but she arrived about 1,000 feet downstream.

The red line was her swim path?

Yeah, she swam a perfectly straight line. No way someone just randomly put a line over the picture to show the round-a-bout path she took.

I've done a good bit of open water swimming doing triathlons. I have no doubt I could cross (although I'd rather not try). I have no idea where I'd end up, but wouldn't drown. And I'm an average swimmer in that regard. It does not surprise me someone could do it at all.

I'm sure some areas are an undertow or downward pulling current but most of it I imagine is just fast surface current. Fast moving water actually provides buoyancy and can give you a rest if you float with it.

Yea after thinking about it, she did it at a perfect part of the river as long as you stay afloat.

The river routinely pulls 40 to 50 foot trees underwater. So avoiding events like that I see a good swimmer like yourself making it

frick, the ferry has a hard time in lower water.

If you told me she started this effort at the Jackson Avenue/Gretna ferry landing, I might have believed it.

That bend is the river is one of the strongest currents throughout the entire river

read a comment from a boat capt that said there's a strong upcurrent eddy at that location.

Swimming in 1.5 cubic ft per second? She has a death wish. Sounds like she caught the Algiers point eddy though to make it to the point. I’ve known several people who have tried this feat and all of them drowned.

That is almost the deepest part of the entire river, some 200' deep.

I didn't know that, but it is a terrifying thought to me. It makes me uneasy just to think about it.

If I had to guess, this is closer to what she actually did
