Swimmming the river was much more common a few generations ago.

EG's grandpappy swam across at Vicksburg over a hundred years ago. It was in the paper and everything.

Although I'm sure it wasn't during a historical crest like this dumbass

Also, remember that the water is totally toxic. It's more like sludgy poison from the smoke-belching factories at the top of the river, swirled together with the pesticide and fertilizer run-off from farms in the Mississippi River watershed... it's a funky, nasty brew. That does not seem like a good idea to dunk yourself in.

Yea... that's not how that works...

That bend is the river is one of the strongest currents throughout the entire river

This is true, but as you pass the mid-point of the river approaching Algiers Point, the current is not downriver the way it is near the east bank. The point actually turns the current upriver nearer to the west bank. It is entirely possible if "she" managed to get past or across the downriver current early, "she" may have hit the upriver eddy and made it.

The point is covered with water and pretty much everything to the right and below that tow in the pic is an upstream eddy.

You could probably just stay afloat and go below the point and the eddy will just naturally bring you back to the point and shore

Staying afloat is the amazing thing to me

Evaded the Cops??

Is it illegal or something?

In Baton Rouge, that used to be the final exam for swim class.

They probably wanted to evaluate her for a psychiatric hold I'd imagine

My dad, from Algiers Point, and his uncles before him, used to swim in the river all the time when they were kids.

One of my teachers swam across the Mississippi in high school while the river was low and it took him a mile down river.

Swimming in the river =/= swimming across though.

That's definitely impressive the river is full of current that goes in several directions it's not just flowing one simple way. Amazing she didn't get hit by some floating debris or something it was definitely unsafe

that's typically what would happen

That is almost the deepest part of the entire river, some 200' deep.

My great uncle Emanuel swam across the River in 1915 with three of his friends. Only two came out with him on the other side.

She is lucky some river traffic didn't hit her. No way a ship could have avoided her.

Let’s say this is true. Its not like she swam across in 45 seconds. Why weren’t there any NOPD officers waiting for her to get out?

Have you seen NOPD response times lately?
