How is the league performing this poorly.
I knew this league certainly had its problems but I didn't think they'd lose $40 million, in the year their Michael Jordan just finished her rookie season.

What's the source for this? The WNBA lost $40 million.
It really shows the jump in overall revenues as the commercial flights were replaced with charter flights and yet losses decreased $10 million. Add an extra $120 million in tv revenue and that could be an extra $10 million per team per year. Current salary caps are at $1.4 million per team.

This is in no small part due to Caitlin Clark bringing in tons of new fans
.

the WNBA is single entity. they don’t divide league “costs” by team. the NBA strokes them a single check. you know this, right?

Who cares. I find womens college hoops way more entertaining anyway.

The wnba league lost 40 million because they owe 40% of revenue to the nba and 20% to outside investors. If the league didn't owe 60% of the money they brought in they would've made profit this year. That's the cost of relying on others to bankroll your startup/expansions
and most startups are expected to return profit at least once in a quarter century. at that point it becomes classified as charity

Please do it - lockout for ever

Let them strike and then shut it down. No one really wants to follow that league unless they are watching CClark.

But this isn't most startups, it's a "pro" sports league.
The owners own the arenas, I doubt they give a shite if the "league" makes money as long as they do and it gives em something to put in their arena on a Tuesday night

you didn’t allude to that in the slightest with your original post.

it costs the owners more to have 1200 people show up for a tuesday night game than it does to have the venue sitting vacant
this isn’t a business venture. the NBA was kowtowed into starting a women’s charity. and during the first glimmer of hope for said league, nearly all of the current and former players, and friendly media, decided to attack the main attraction for her skin color

you couldn’t write a better script

Imagine the shitshow that would be replacement WNBA players
On or off the court?
I could see some hood rat shite happening off the court the way things went down with Caitlin Clark.

This is interesting. Yes I know the league loses money, but the pay is actually legitimately low. What if the NBA players are overpayed and they go into a lockout even though the NBA makes billions of dollars. They sell out more seats now than they did 20 years ago that's for sure.

Call me crazy, but I feel like this was bound to happen with the way the league was set up to begin with, inorganically with no fan support and almost 100 percent subsidization from the NBA. They're finally starting to find some popularity and some revenue streams but the way it's all set up, the money isn't being spread around properly. I wouldn't doubt if they still owe a bunch of money to the NBA. I read somewhere that in a year or two there will be a new TV contract with a dramatic increase in revenue for the league. They may actually need a strike or lockout in order to fix the way they're doing things and get their finances in order.

The WNBA will start making money in the 2026 media deals, as the bump in media money far exceeds the annual losses they currently have.
The players - asuming the union deal is for a percentage of revenues - stand to get nice raises as it is.
