Maybe intervene if it's physical, but keep in mind that cops consider a domestic disturbance the most dangerous call to answer.

My husband used to hold me back from going outside and interceding in our neighbor's altercations. Then when she tried to turn our locked door knob at 4am to get in our house to get away

For reasons similar to the ones mentioned, I chose not to intercede. Though I did start to when the male began kicking the female's dog. Fortunately, the cops made it there at the same time.
