St Landry, Evangeline, Acadia, and Iberia schools all closed now.

Frickin hell man. You'd swear we were going to have a blizzard.

18z GFS came in a tick warmer, and spread the precip a little further north. Minor variations from run to run at this point.

These comments are usually made by a person with minimal critical thinking skills. The NWS predicting a greater than 30% chance of >1" of snowfall in those parishes makes this an easy call for a school system. It's snow and it's in Louisiana - history suggests it could be a problem.

Yeah, we have the idea of what's going to happen, with a degree here or degree there making a big difference. Probably about time to check the short range high res models, check reports to places west of here, and see how it unfolds.

While not as likely, the NWS is also showing a 5-20% chance of freezing rain in the Acadiana area and along the Florida parishes that border MS.

They have been saying no accumulation on the roads. So what exactly do you expect me to think? How does no accumulation on the roads pose a problem?

They are doing it to cover their asses, that's it.

NWS Houston forecast discussion:

quote:

Challenging forecast tonight with possibility of wet snow for
many areas and freezing temperatures for northern half of the
area. Current...light rain is occurring with temperatures mainly
in the lower to mid 40s. Sounding from UH and StormGeo showing
mostly subfreezing conditions aloft with freezing level only 2500
feet. Surface based warm layer enough for now keeping
precipitation all rain across the forecast area. Surface wet bulbs
also generally well above freezing attm. Lower dewpoint air
poised over northern counties should advect southward tonight. At
the same time upper trough and jet streak with associated lift
progged to migrate cross the area. This feature should bring
another band of precip across at least southern portions of the
area tonight. As this occurs there looks to be a small window
where temperature profiles, lift and adequate moisture coincide
for a period of wet snow over southern two tiers of counties.
Farther north will likely be some snowflakes as well but moisture
more limited so would expect just some flurries north.
Precipitation should push offshore tomorrow morning. Expect little
or no accumulation from the snow given warm boundary layer
temperatures. Cant rule out a small slushy accumulation if a
heavier band develops mainly on grassy areas over SW zones.

I posted this in the other thread:

The main reason the schools close more often than they did 20-30+ years ago is the fact that they have more extra days built into the schedule. I remember how summer used to be about 3 full months, now the kids are lucky to have 2 months and a week. The schools have extra days scheduled in for exactly this reason. Its easier for them to close and not have to make the day up later, which keeps a ton of traffic off the road and kiddos home safe. Makes sense for a lot of reasons.

Would you want to be the one in charge when, in the off chance a bit of ice accumulates on a bridge, a bus full of kids ends up in a ditch?
