I have no basis for this but I think the police have DNA evidence that they suspect is from the killer and are waiting for all the test results to be returned to them. You have to remember DNA testing is not like on TV where you get results back in a day. It can take months to get DNA test results back. I'm also curious if the police are using a DNA genealogy database like they did with the Golden State Killer in order to find the murderer.

I thought they announced they had gotten a lot of forensics back a couple of weeks ago.
Without a murder weapon, sex element to crimes, or injury during the murders leaving dna only killer would leave it may be harder to tie something to killer especially if killer had reason to be at house before murders (or around them earlier in night).
They released a police video showing cops back in September coming to check on a noise complaint, and there was a party going on with no roommates present. Whoever was at house got I think Madison on the phone to talk to the cops, and she apologized. The cops said she needed to get back and deal with people at house making noise. If house was a place a lot of people hung out and did so regardless of roommates actually being there at times with that being a home football game weekend there are probably a lot of prints and standard dna people normally leave daily they have to work through.

I think that given the choice between being super discreet and taking a very low profile approach to all continued work on the case…..and……eagerly disclosing to a increasingly pessimistic and doubtful public (especially the town, school and community and especially victims’ families) thereby relieving themselves of what is I’m sure painful stress and anxiety stemming from the thus far fruitless effort (but diligent regardless, I’m sure):
My guess is that they would and will opt for the near breaking point stress relief of throwing a decent person of interest out to the aforementioned public.
Thus, IMHO, they’re unfortunately lost, for a few uncommon reasons I’m sure. Chief among them being that the perp somehow got lucky at every crucial turn and has heretofore slipped the noose. Even as to “possible identity”. But fortunately on the flip side of the coin, this case could turn on a single matter that could potentially develop in a single day’s time. Which is what I believe they’re desperately hoping for at this precise time.

I think they are literally clueless. It seems that if they had anything to go on, they would have developed a case by now. Nothing.
As I have posted before, my impression has been that few of these cases get “ solved”. Almost always, a witness or an informant breaks the case. Only then do police use science/ forensics to establish guilt.
Even if there is dna at the scene, what does that prove? If they find the weapon, they can try to trace ownership. But how?
Too much time has gone by. All they can hope for now is someone to give them a lead. And I imagine they have too many of those to effectively follow up.

Didn't police early on claim it was a targeted attack?
If they really meant that, you'd think they have an idea of who committed the crime.
Or was it because one of the victims was more brutally attacked than the others, leading the police to assume it was attack on one and the others were more just in the way?

They can tell from crime scene it was targeted and still not have any idea of who did it.

Umm no. How are they in the way as it seems he went into each bedroom to do the killings. The two downstairs didn’t seem to be in the way and left them alive or didn’t know they were there.

They are still looking for the white Elantra. It’s just that that Elantra wasn’t the one near the house at the time of the murder.
