Will our incompetent LADOTD ever restart the LA1 bridge project in Port Allen?

Wonder if the unfinished bridge will just be a permanent fixture just like those "future I-49 corridor" signs in Lafayette.
LADOTD release from 8 months ago announcing delay
This isn't the first time we've had to build things adjacent to a major waterway. This bridge is replacing an older crossing that exists 40' away from it.
quote:
Baton Rouge – Unexpected settlement discovered during construction of the LA 1 replacement bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in West Baton Rouge will cause construction delays. The project could be delayed up to 10 months because of excessive settlement of the piles under each of the 17 new bridge columns.
There will be no impacts to the travel lanes on the current LA 1 bridge and construction delays on this project will not cause further inconvenience to the traveling public. Motorists should continue to be aware of construction vehicles and equipment adjacent to LA 1 throughout the project and always use extreme caution when driving through work zones.
After the settling was discovered, geotechnical personnel from DOTD and the contractor determined that additional or longer piles was an option to lessen the excessive settling. In lieu of adding more or longer piles, this issue will be mitigated using an alternative soil improvement technique called low-mobility grouting, whereby grout is injected into the ground beneath the piles to compact loose soils.
This $57.7 million project, which began in April 2022, will replace the current southbound bridge with a new bridge that will be constructed on the west side of the existing structure, in addition to realigning Ernest Wilson Drive and LA 1 to connect with the new bridge.
The second phase, which is scheduled to go to bid after Phase 1, will remove both of the existing original bridges and construct a new northbound bridge, as well as replace frontage roads on the south side of the bridge. Once both phases are completed, there will be a new southbound bridge that has three 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders, and a new northbound bridge with two 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders and a barrier-separated exit lane for I-10 eastbound.

Fun fact. The guy that headed DOTD during the design and early build phases of that debacle is running for governor. His campaign slogan is ironically "Let's build bridges".
I can only assume this is a huge joke that reflects the deep contempt that everyone associated with Louisiana's DOTD has for the taxpayers of this state.

yes they will, they just need to do another study to determine what of the best 5 studies out there they would choose to make the right decision on the project.

Maybe they should have studied how to build a foundation for a bridge.....
I'm glad we are trying to fix the outdated and long neglected bridge. But how the frick did this happen?

DOTD didn't even do anything about the dam they built along I-12 in Denham and Oneal lane area even though they are getting sued and a bunch of people flooded and rescuers almost died getting through choke points under bridges. Louisiana is the land of low expectations and excuses.

I heard Kiewit took all of the resources from this job and moved them to another job, that will not finish until November.

The out of state contractor told the LADOTD the crews are busy on another project and will be back once the job they went to is completed. Should be sometime in November but then the holidays start so maybe after Mardi Gras?

Wee need to be more charitable and give DOTD a break. The engineers there are probably top talent sourced from throughout the globe.
I guess no one has ever built a bridge in Louisiana. Who knew soil compaction could be a factor?

From July 2023 article in Westside Journal:
quote:
As of July 2023, the DOTD estimates steel work on the new southbound intracoastal bridge will resume in October or November. This estimate remains as predicted when the specialized contractors were first dismissed from the job due to settlement in January.
quote:
This return date for specialized crews was determined by the steel workers’ other scheduled projects per Mallet, regardless of when the new grout work is complete.
As of July, grout work on the pilings is ongoing. Mallet estimated completion of the grout work to be in September of 2023.
quote:
The bridge’s estimated completion was originally aimed for the end of 2023. However, with the needed grout work, DOTD added 10 months to that projection in January. At that time, special steel contractors were temporarily dismissed from work on the Intracoastal bridge as a definitive solution for securing the pilings of the new south bridge had yet to be determined.

Do you want to pay for it? The gas tax hasn’t been raised since the 90s. Try building a deck to your house in 2023 with a 1995 budget.
I don’t want to pay more taxes. I pay plenty. But people on here bitch and complain about “the guvment” too damn much. Why don’t you pool your money with some of your friends and local business and finance the project. Report back on your efforts.

The project is on hold while the head of the LADOTD is running for Governor.
Once he’s elected, the project will resume.

I read this in July too, hard to understand how crews that hang steel and deck pans are "specialized" for bridge construction. Seems like it should be pretty standard. Assuming it's a design error Kewit fixin ta eat.

Wilson resigned as head of the LADOTD on March 7th and was replaced by Dr. Erik Kalivoda.
