Prompt engineering? Seriously? For what, about 3 months.

I'm in the industry. If you think AI will fully replace 80% of coding jobs in 5 years then you have 0 idea how "coding" or AI work.

In 5 years it MIGHT replace 80% of "coding" jobs like website design or QA automation but it still requires lots of hand holding to accomplish that today.

I think the massive push towards blue collar jobs is a mistake. I don’t know if some of you have been paying attention but we have flood the country with manual labor over the past 10 years.

Also, if every young kid goes to blue collar work it will saturate the market just like has happened with coding. Programmers are a dime a dozen.

With all that negativity, I don’t know what the answer is, because AI is inevitably coming for a lot of white collar jobs.

I think his point is that robots are primarily used in shop spaces with production runs. Not in the field. Not saying it can't or won't happen, but a small mom and pop business won't be able to afford the computer driven fabrication machinery. And customers wanting something built on their land won't be able to afford the businesses that owns the AI driven welding operation at least in the near term. There will be a long term need for a good majority of welders. IMO.

I have a feeling that AI will take over most welding at some point. AI doesn't bitch or stop showing up to work because it's on a drug bender or in jail for not paying child support

I think that’s what you want to believe. I listened to a tech guy say they had an issue that took a team of coders a month to resolve and implement and AI did it in a day. And AI will grow exponentially and explode in the next 36 months. Coders are far from safe. Really nothing is safe unless government intervenes with specific licensing/barrier to entry regulations. And do we even want that? It’s ALL about to change. And I’m not picking on you. There is very little I do that AI can’t do faster, cheaper and more comprehensively. And most people who don’t sweat for a living will find this out.

Assembly line jobs, in general, will be in danger of being replaced by robotics, but that's been happening for a while now. AI will just make it happen a little quicker. But it always ultimately comes down to cost and where your break-even is. It is always about return on investment.

Robots can weld and they don't require benefits or breaks during the day.

AI needs one thing above all: power.

"Learn to build power infrastructure."

Jobs related to this will keep you busy for the foreseeable future.

But the number needed will be greatly diminished

I am thinking no more than 20% of the current programmers will be needed in 5 years

None of this matters. Five H1Bs are cheaper than one citizen, and 20 Indians in Hyderabad are cheaper than five H1Bs.

The other AI ( actually Indians) is taking American tech jobs. Some will get hired back to fix AI’s mess but most will be replaced by other offshoring markets (Latin America/Eastern Europe).

This. I saw a lot of vendors peddling and displaying robo-welders at the workboat show recently. It’s coming.

They are the same ones saying we need infinite H1B because US college grads are too stupid and lazy and incompetent while automatically assuming every single Indian is super smart, competent and qualified

There is no welding job of any sort that can be done by the best human welder that can't be done better by a machine....its just a matter of start up cost. Technology is replacing trade jobs faster than it is tech jobs and has been for about 75 years. Welding is a fantastic trade but it is one of the easier ones to buy a machine to replace a fleet of people in. The machine is damned expensive now but getting cheaper every minute.
