There was a large fire in the median westbound at the Welsh exit earlier today that had i10 backed up. Now I’m hearing Welsh FD is heading south down LA 99 to fight another one out in the woods.

Weird how there are random fires that just start out in the woods.

Hadn't heard any updates on the Westlake fire but it looks like it's the third on over in that area in the last week.

I'll tell you the smoke in the area has increased significantly.

This outflow boundary is going to be a problem for the main fire area. No rain and an uptick in wind. Probably some anxious folks on the ground there watching on radar.

Perhaps someone who is good at keeping the OP updated can start a comprehensive new thread.

Legend. I just ran the past and future radar on Merryville. ( I don’t have the resources or knowledge that you have.). It looks to me like the rain drifts away from the fire area.

Is that because of the heat from the fire?

I remember when Freeport Sulphur had the mine just out of Bay St Elaine in Lake Pelto. There was a very large steam boiler barge that put out a lot of heat. They used it for the Frasch Process. ( a shite load of steam injected into the sulphur dome to boil up the sulphur ).

The trout were ther because of the huge shell pad and current.

It never rained n top of the island. The squalls would always go around the island. You would get wind but no rain.

Is the same phenomenon?

I don't think so in this case. How far these showers/storms would get today was always the question. Models started to fizzle them out before they got there, due to sunset mainly. Daytime heating helped them develop, and when the sun started to set they lost steam.

At that point associated winds become the main concern.

It could be anything. You’d be surprised how many roadside fires during drought conditions are caused by something as benign as trailers.
Everything from loose chains bouncing off the pavement creating sparks to a flat trailer tire can ignite a grass fire.

You’d be amazed at what’s left of it now if that’s the last time you saw it and remember it to be

The Lake Chuck radar is getting good rain. That station has recorded a quarter inch in 6 minutes.

It also had a 63mph wind gust.

Up to this point, I had never even considered that wildfires would significantly affect weather. Completely logical for large fires I just never put the two together.

Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office

***UPDATE***

As of this afternoon the mandatory evacuation order for the city limits of Merryville has been lifted. The areas east, northeast, and north of Merryville remains in the mandatory evacuation order. The Junction to Seth Cole and Seth Cole to Vigor Miers/Williams Rd mandatory evacuation order remains and the voluntary evacuation order is still in place for the Hauser Rd/Ragle Rd area north of Longville. Power has been restored in Merryville and Center Point Entergy has completed its inspections for safety and plan on starting in the morning on repairing so gas can be turned back on.

Today fire fighting efforts were concentrated on the north/northwest portion of the Tiger Island fire near the Junction area where the majority of helicopter water drops were made in an effort to slow the fire line there. The new Red Strike Team Tiger Island Fire - La - Information has assumed the command effort over the Tiger Island Fire portion of the parish and completed a thermal mapping imaging of the fire and has reported 50% containment with 33,294 total acres burned. As they become more established here with all their assets in place we expect to be able to report more on their work done and statistics. We encourage you to follow them as they will be posting information on the work they are doing. They reported that our fire is the number 2 priority, second largest disaster, in the country at this time making asset availability even higher on receiving aircraft and other equipment necessary.

As a reminder the BURN BAN is still in effect and remains as a ZERO tolerance situation. Be smart, be safe, and do not burn for any reason.
