It is a reasonable expectation that she could go to the gas station and not be harmed. Don't blame yourself
It really sucks that we have to do this but I always scan my surroundings anytime I step out or into my truck. I see something that doesn't look right and I'm instantly on guard

Parking lots and gas stations are the most likely places you will get attacked. I suggest you train to be able to defend yourself if necessary and by whatever means you believe is necessary. No one will care more about your well being than you.
