I don't know anyone who actually does this. But do see your point, as I felt like that when I was there.

But the grass ain't always greener.

Mine too. He tells me weekly how much he regrets staying here and raising me in this state.

My parents are divorced but my dad says if my family leaves he'll probably move somewhere in the same general vicinity. My mom will never leave but I also have little sister in BR that's not going anywhere. My other sibling lives in Texas.

I never wanted to move but after a couple Florida vacations this year, I could see moving to that area of the country. After the way our state has been heading, it's harder and harder for me to justify wanting to stay here.

Parents and grandparents get over it.

Allowing that kind of guilt to ruin a life isn't healthy.

It really is silly waking up every day and just hoping you have electricity. It would be one thing if it didn't cost first-world prices to live here, but it does.

We moved out of BR just over a year ago and rented out the house. The last two hurricane seasons and recent heavy rain storms/floods have made me question even owning a rental property down there. I think we’ll end up selling the house soon just to avoid the stress of hurricanes and flooding.

It's not the hurricanes with Florida. They now how to handle hurricanes. They know how to rebuild their grid. They know how to prevent infrastructure damage and get everything back up quicker.

Made a move later in life and we are glad we did. Wife had lived in Lake Chas her entire life so when a job opened up in Hou we went for it. Still not too far away to go back and visit.

There's lots of things I love about Louisiana, the food, the culture, the music, the festivals, the fishing and hunting. However, as I've grown older and how have a kid I've gotten to where I find it much harder to appreciate these things and overlook all that's terrible. Terrible politicians, crumbling infrastructure, poor job market, badly performing education system, you can go on and on.

Unfortunately I'm stuck here, family is here, I'm tied into an unmovable family business, we've discussed moving to Colorado but I doubt we ever get to pull the trigger.

Florida is a well run state but the climate isn't appealing to me at all.

Yep.

To me Louisiana has all or most of the negatives of a deep red and deep blue state at the same time with virtually none of the positives you can get from either.

Shitty economy
High taxes
Insane corruption
Terrible education system
Ridiculous and engrained social conservatism (this is changing, but at a MUCH slower rate than surrounding states)

It’s like you get the worst of both worlds here. Tired of it.

We're considering N Carolina, Savannah, Houston, Fort Worth, Charleston, maybe Tennessee, maybe Colorado.

From the list above TN is the best combo of normal people in a pretty place (except for Nashville). CO is stunning but expensive and liberal. Fort Worth is ok. Hou is a s-hole and the other two are small tourist traps.

Nothing to do with Ida, but if you are over 45 and haven’t thought about leaving after watching both BR and NOLA deteriorate over the last 20 years than I question both your sanity and intelligence. It’s been a steady 20 year decline , with the pace increasing over the last five years. We told both of our parents that in the next 3-5 years we will be ready. When we say we are ready, they have 6 months to get on board or be left behind.

I was in Nashville Saturday... that place continues to explode. It feels like the've added hundreds of office and condo towers in just the two years since the LSU/Vandy game in 2019. No shortage of entertainment though.

Politicians everywhere are horrible, but when you take a look at Louisiana and see that our gold standard is an idiot like Garret Graves, and the morons of this state are routinely fooled by pieces of shite like John Bel Edwards and Bill Cassidy, you realize there is no hope.

But where do you go? To the West with wildfires? To the East with hurricanes and flooding?
To the mid country where there are tornadoes?
Or to the north where you will fight winter snow every year guaranteed?

I moved to TN, and while there has been flooding and tornadoes, I have not been directly affected by them in the almost decade I’ve been here. That’s the thing about tornadoes and floods, they are hit and miss, unlike hurricanes that affect everyone for hundreds of miles. Buy high ground and you won’t flood. Tornadoes are like lightening, it’s a roll of the dice, but they don’t affect the vast majority.

Besides hurricanes, I also left behind all the murder and other crime, local government incompetence and corruption, and state income tax. Oh, and car insurance is less than 1/2 price. Oh and it’s not “devil’s arse crack hot” 8 months out of the year.

TLDR: Don’t compare hurricanes to tornadoes and floods. LA has been devastated several times in the last 10 years since I left while I haven’t had $1 of damage to my home or property in TN during the same time frame.

Sums it up. We can't buy a house here, we are looking to relocate after I graduate. My wife is WFH so she just needs to be within 3.5 hours of one of their corporate hubs. Right now we are thinking Charlotte.

Regardless, we will likely never move back to Louisiana. All of our family is there, but sure as frick won't be.
