As her husband you probably have the best perspective on her personality and tendencies. Does she struggle with motivation? Impulse control? How's her work performance? If a person exhibits some mild OCD that gets in the way of completing tasks or managing their time, a small dose of stimulant can help. Personally, I think anything over 20/30 mg of Vyvanse or 10mg of Adderall is unnecessary. I'm no doctor but personal experience taught me there are two general types of stimulant effects: the person who gets laser focused on whatever task and has no patience for bullshite/small talk or the person who chain smokes while texting/talking to anyone who will listen (high).

Not saying this will happen, but 9/10 meth addicts that I treat were prescribed adderall either as a kid or adult and at some point ran out early or had some explain that meth was the same thing and that was all she wrote.

I’m guessing she pressed the doctor on the issue. Normal doctors don’t usually offer adderall for a 37 year old after one visit. It’s akin to offering Percocet to someone who says they’re lower back aches sometimes. Was this a yearly physical or did she make this appointment specifically for this issue? Do any of your kids take adderall and she is taking some of theirs, and wants her own script? It just sounds fishy overall.

What are you afraid of ?
The side effects are minimal.
Don't mix with energy drinks or other amphetamines.

Shady AF, huge red flags all the way around. This would be a declaration of war in my house…I’d be flushing it, cancelling her insurance, whatever it takes.

she probably is just a huge OCD/control freak with anxiety and thinks everything needs to be perfect but she can’t meet her unreasonable expectations. Needs to try Luvox or actually see a therapist before going after addictive drugs

I say good on OP to have reservations about an addictive medication. He knows her well, and people do with hold information from their doctors.

Too many older adults are lining up to pass the ADHD test Given the huge explosion in new diagnoses in this age group the psych profession may soon have to find a way rein in the overprescribing.

Very few people stop taking it once they've been taking it regularly. 65 year olds will beg their cardiologist to not advise against it. A portion of people will ultimately go on to develop dependencies on benzos or hypnotics to manage stimulant side effects. Add alcohol with any regularity and that person is now a mess. It's really sad.

I bet the busy ADHD docs in my area must feel a little dirty about 20% their adult patients but just write that shite anyway. It definitely helps a lot of people but I get OP's concern.

If she really needs it there is no reason to be scared of it. I’ve been on the same dose XR for over 10 years. Never felt I needed more, never really felt like I was “methed out” either. Don’t know why people say it’s “super addictive” unless maybe you just have an addictive personality. I went a month without it with 0 withdrawal or craving for it, other than my focus went back to being terrible and basically had the same issues I was having before I was taking it. But I wasn’t going around trying to score meth to feed an addiction.

It’s great if you really need it. If you take it as a party drug or as a “limitless” pill, then yeah you’re probably gonna have issues.

It's well known that the OT has a fair share of potheads and insert drug here addicts/former addicts, so it's safe to say the people saying it's addictive are relying on hearsay or have addictive personalities

I personally know 4 people who had serious issues with it. 2 of them it completely derailed their lives. If you want to bury your head in the sand, by all means go ahead, but adderall addiction and/or abuse is absolutely a real thing in the US.

Not burying my head at all. I have known a frickload of people who have serious issues with stimulants.

I have also known many who take them with no problem and quit without issue.

Drug addiction and/or abuse is absolutely a real thing in the US, obviously we all know that, you just have to look around. Adderall Vyvanse are definitely included.

It doesn't affect everyone, however. Some people will be prone to addiction. Some people will find things to be addicted to. Others will not. Calling all of them addictive is a load of BS.

Much of it comes down to the person, much like the people who take opioids as prescribed for surgical pain and then never touch them again when they aren't in pain anymore.

In my experience it’s person to person. I work with fellas that had a horrible time with it, most of which got all hyped up, pounded beers and in turn, almost got divorced. Me? I’ve been on 25mg XR for 3 years (I’m 40) and have had zero issues. I take mine most work days and don’t most off days. BUT, I know I don’t have and addictive personality and never had substance abuse issues. It’s been wonderful for me when it comes to work and being focused and present at home when shift work and rotating shifts get my sleep cycle off. It’s not for everyone and it can definitely cause issues with some but, it’s improved my mood and focus exponentially. In fact, my blood work has improved yearly since I started it. Less hungry? Yes…Less stress due to being able to focus? Yes…

Just be glad you are not taking it; otherwise you may have some issues down there. Sometimes men take it “to last longer,” but one of the side effects can be ED and loss of desire for women.

My sister in law started taking that shite and soon after started doing crazy shite like mowing the neighbor’s lawn during the day after cleaning like a wizard. She had to get off.
