Definiely a Vizsla. They are on most top 5 lists for families with kids and lists for most affectionate breed. That is saying a lot since most people haven't heard of them.

The puppies are very expensive and you will be interviewed to see you are worthy of owning one. No joke.

I have a Bulldog and 2 French Bulldogs that I love. They are great dogs for kids indoors. Cannot tolerate heat at all. Not active at all. I would say not a good choice if you want them to interact or play with the kids.
They shed a bit and are pretty messy. Semi high maintenance like cleaning the folds on their face, eyes, ears and tail pocket area. Vet costs are up there.

Spanish Mastiff. Give those kids something to hold on to, and to ride.

Labradoodle. Ours is about 8 months old now and our three year old loves her.

When I met my wife 8 years ago she had a Boston Terrior / Rat Terrior mix she had adopted..... Can honestly say he is the best dog I could ever imagine. Actually will probably get another Boston Terrior soon. They are lighter than the 40-80 you mention but are great dogs.

This would be my pick.
If money was no option, I've always wanted a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd. Unfortunately dander and myself don't get along, so that doesn't ever seem like a possibility.
But I think this is a breed you should definitely consider. Meets size requirements, smart and great family dog. Plus you have a big backyard because it'll need the exercise.
Only criteria it doesn't exactly meet is the short hair, but if you're willing to let go of that I think it'd work out.

Great dogs, but think they are a tad over 80 lbs.
That why I didn't mention shepherds because all of mine are over 80 and shed like crazy.

A golden retriever.
My family has had labs, mixed breeds, scotties, terriers of all kind. Friends have had all different sorts of breeds to.
I decided to go for a golden retriever because they aren't as hyper as labs, but still good hunting companions. Well, a few weeks of walking him in different places, and everyone told me once I get a golden retriever, I will never get another dog.
Now I know I will never get another breed of dog. My golden has been the best dog I have ever had. Male dog was potty trained before he was 10 weeks old. Loves to learn. Is great with very young children. He will chase my little nephew, but always be right behind him and never actually touch him. Very affectionate and I never have to worry about him hurting another person or dog. The one time he accidently put his teeth on me when we were playing rough, you saw he had instant regret and stopped playing until I was ready. There are so many little things that is so great about him that he just naturally knows.
Again, once you get a golden retriever, you will never want another breed.

Similar experience with my yellow lab female. Learned very fast and can tell me when she needs/wants to do anything. Extremely smart and well behaved

Yes, good boys for sure, but also know that lab puppies can wreak havoc inside the house if they're not properly trained. If you train them early they are the best friend man could ever have.

We got a staffordshire mix. Pit bull mix. She's the best dog I've seen in my life. People always comment how awesome she is. And she's not even 2 years old yet. Very intelligent & pretty much spends her entire life trying to please her owners & random strangers.
