Forget dalmation or weimer ... both require far more exercise (i.e., daily walks and more) than you or your wife can provide.

Get a beagle mix or maybe an older rescue from the pound that doesn't need too much exercise and won't dig up your yard.

I've known three Dalmatians. Two with one family, one with another. All three lost it as they got a little older and became agressive towards their owners. Good dogs before that. It may be the breeding at that time, but I personally am not taking a chance on that breed.

This one (in NW La.): Mother is a wild stray and this puppy was under my neighbor's house. He trapped her and we took her in because she'd never been around people. She has adopted the trap as her "crate" and she housebroke herself. She plays with my dogs, but is still shy (She's only been around people for three days). The mother is a large dog, probably a mastiff mix. The dog has blue eyes.

Go to the pound/humane society and adopt a mutt.

A mut from a shelter. They are the best dogs and live the longest.

Boxer, and it isn't even close. Had mine trained by the 3-4 month mark to appropriately tell me when he needed to eat, go outside, play, etc. He obeyed commands to sit by my side when a car came by, sit, lay down, beg... Smartest dog I ever owned.

Name was Beau. Great with my young brothers, neighbors toddlers, and protected a best friend's newborn from anything/anyone unknown in public get togethers (non-aggressively, and obeying commands).

Get one.

Dalmatians are the worst shedding dogs EVER. Trust me on this. They are also very hyper and are not good with kids at all. Have a friend that breeds and shows them and she won't sell hers to people with kids.

My dream dog is a standard poodle. They are good with kids, smart and do not shed.
One day I will have one, but for now I'll just be happy with my mixes...

Blue or Red Heeler (Austrailian Cattle dog) is the answer you're looking for.
