I could live in Kansas. A bunch of upland birds and big game there including ducks and geese.

I could go hunt there but I'd get the hell out as soon as I'm done.

The western slope is underrated as far as ugly shitholes go, too. Grand Junction/Montrose area in particular is like the Morgan City of the west.

This is def true and it makes me sad. That area, particularly GJ/Fruita, is an outdoor mecca. World class MTBing for one.

I'd be there next week if the food and nightlife in town was worth a shite.

My favorite things about driving through Kansas are the profound number of Christian talk-radio stations and the countless right to life, fundamentalist Christian billboards that dot the roadside.

Kansas can't be worse than Mississippi? Yes it is. It's a shole. Did Cessna ever move to BR. That was the big thing up there then. The governor of Kansas said they couldn't offer them the things BR could offer.

Know how I know you've never eaten anything in Kansas?

Spaulding, how many times have you been to The Outhouse?

That is the holy grail of trashy strip clubs. I've never seen anything like it, to be honest.

I had me a mighty fine chicken fried steak with gravy in mashed potaters and bacon soaked green beans in Topeka one time.

Kansas isn't so bad. You get used to it. Stop in Colby or Hays when driving across on 70, a lot of the gas stations off the other exits gouge people on prices.

In answer to the posted question, because they are from there. You likely went through Colby, Kansas, on the far western edge of Kansas off of I-70. Place is a true final outpost in a Star Wars bar scene kind of way.

I was transferred to KC(lived in Overland Park) in 2005 and escaped to Atlanta area in 2010. OP is a great place to raise kids in a "Stepford Wives" existence. There are a lot of folks that are born, raised and plan on dying in Kansas (the whole voluntary thing). That is fine, but there is a sense that a large number of the people strive for mediocrity.

I've been more times than I'd like to admit...that was like the late night destination for an 18 year old. It was BYOB so they never cared if you drank underage.

It's the dumpiest place I've probably ever been to

Cheyenne is all prairie with much to look at, Laramie is ok due to being a college town and close proximity to the Snowy Range. Rock Springs is pretty bad.

But northern Wyoming is gorgeous...From Sundance west to Sheridan, than Sheridan over to Cody and Yellowstone, your mouth will be dropped at how beautiful and western it is

Got a flat tire on vacation in Lebo, KS when it was about 100 degrees. Car full of stuff, and two toddlers. I could have done without that.

That said, I'd rather drive across Kansas than go North-South thru Illinois. It's just as boring, but (at least when i've done it) the speed limit is 55 and crawling w/ state troopers.

Free State Brewery was greatness back in the day. Lawrence has some pretty good restaurants.

Don't forget to stop at Prairie Dog Town to see the world's largest prairie dog in Oakley, KS!

Depends on your definition of shithole. Much of Wyoming, Montana and more than half of Colorado is flat and pretty uninspiring. The pretty parts are spectacular though. I've enjoyed driving through Wyoming, didn't find the towns I've been to be shitholes. They're not much different than most towns you'll find anywhere.

Yeah, it's pretty damn boring, I drove from Dallas to Garden City,Kansas once. I think I went 200 miles without seeing a full sized tree.
I will say though, the area north of Manhattan is actually a little different. Some hills and trees there.
Colorado is damn boring too, until you get to Denver.
