Having grown up in that environment and knowing plenty now who either moved up in the churches or out, this is a cop out...North La Baptists aren't against weed legalization contrary to what your pot head friends say..The issue, is that there is no "leader" for the movement..You think sending an unemployed hippy as the face is what those of us who actually vote look for ? I've been for it for a while based on the fact that there are far worse things out there..

It's all about money and controlling those who get the money.

The time to make a move was before Federal Legalization, and before Texas, Ark, Miss, and Alabama.

The first southern state to legalize will make a killing.

Our guys are fighting over who gets to make the money.

Nobody wants to go to bat for it in the state legislature for fear of being branded a stoner, and it's likelyhood of passing and getting to a vote is zero. Nevermind that the people would probably vote it in.

This is what I meant regarding the sheriff's lobby. Every time medical would come up in the caucus, these assholes were in there, pounding their fists about what an atrocity it would be. Then, the head of the sheriff's lobby (or at least one of the higher ups) had a friend whose daughter had a condition that could be improved with medical, and their tune changed somewhat. Never mind the mountains of evidence that existed prior to that. Billy Bob just dismissed as misguided librul propaganda. It wasn't until he knew someone who would benefit from it, so our freedoms are evidently held hostage by the life experiences of these pieces of shite.

North LA Baptists are 100% trying to legislate their morality. Just look at at their opposition to fantasy sports betting. If you think they will be fine with MJ legalization, I have some beach-front property in Arizona you might be interested in.

The chief opponents of the ballot measure were the Louisiana Family Forum, which calls itself an advocate of traditional family values, and the Louisiana Baptist Convention, which includes 1,650 churches.

Leaders of those groups contend the games would prey on youngsters, worsen Louisiana's already costly problem with troubled gamblers and legalize another form of gambling in a gambling-saturated state.

"They are being exposed to adult content in ways we never would have imagined in 1992 when the internet first started gaining popularity," said Will Hall, director of the Office of Public Policy for the Louisiana Baptist Convention.

Hopefully it will be soon. There is absolutely nothing wrong with recreational or medical marijuana. It will also bring much needed tax revenue to our state!

My parents are dyed in the wool Southern Baptists in Shreveport and even they said they support it being legalized for medical reasons. They are pushing eighty too. I was surprised.

Not as long as it requires the legislature to either pass a law directly, or for them to put it on the ballot. The lack of voter referendum in LA really screws the public with regards to stuff like that. I'm fully convinced that if we did have voter referendum, it may already be passed in LA.

Some of the older generations are coming around to it. It can help ease pain in old age. Also it can benefit tremendously with quality of life if there is onset of certain illnesses later in life.

Every congressman but one is against it. Even Edwards is against it. So you gotta have some support before it’ll ever get close to the ballot.

Because it’s a gateway drug that will lead you and your kids to OD’ing in an alleyway.

it will become legalized or decriminalized after and only after the behind the scenes negotiations are complete involving the ongoing under the table transfer of $$$, not one second sooner...

It seems like a natural thing for LA. It's already a trashy state so why not?

Yup! I can tell you, from experience, people are traveling to MS to make bets, people passing through there stop to make bets, and people who live within a decent distance (like Nola) are traveling there for extended weekends and making bets.

Article on MS Sports Betting

Looking at these numbers alone, LA as a state is missing out on MILLIONS in rev including much for local municipalities. I'd love to see compare Harrah's and other Nola casinos numbers from same time last year compared to this. I'd be willing to bet it's down dramatically.
