Autonomous cars should be banned until this evolves and the cars talk to each other and sychronize their movements within a dedicated roadway.

Computer cars over here
Human driven cars over there

Shel11111? You ready to put your name at the top of the list to go first?

PUT YOUR CHILDREN'S LIVES WHERE YOU MOUTH IS
Yep...as soon as you do the same for human drivers. Ready?

Best part is, right now in 2018 I'd be willing to bet my kids would be safer. 20 or 50 years from now....pfffttt. Not even close.

Why?

Are we banning human drivers too?

You realize at some point everyone is going to be making that decision. Like it or not, this technology is coming at some point.

Today? Of course not. In the future at some unpredictable point? Sure.

Millions of humans have died perfecting technologies, processes and other things we take for granted.

That will continue.

I'll never trust a computer to safely drive me. Car manufacturers can't get simple shite right without a plethora of recalls

Banned? How are you supposed to develop such a system when they're banned?

they simply will never account for all the unknowns. hell we can't even get the software right for this stupid messageboard.

no matter how 'smart' the imperfect humans that program a robot car are, these cars still travel over pothole-ridden streets in NOLA and roads without adequate markings and are susceptible to sensor damage, crashed software, invisible patches of ice and other cues that humans process subconsciously all day long and about a billion other things.

you put a robot car on a PEFECT test track correctly marked in ideal conditions without those pesky humans jaywalking with bikes and maybe you can accomodate most of the unknowns.

real world? forget it.

All of this can be true, and these cars can still eventually be much safer than human drivers, who will also never be able to navigate all of the unknowns.

Because they need more government money for that.

Probably. The new ones require that the driver's face be aimed towards the windshield. I guess the system can see that?

Volvo has a system.
BMW and Mercedes are developing them.
Cadillac actually has a very good system that doesn't hunt for the center of the lane like Tesla, but it's only available on their most expensive models and it only works on major highways.

Tesla is probably at least somewhat ahead of everyone in this particular area.

So basically this accident was caused by the idiot driving, like most are.

All of this will be solved when vehicles start to send out anonymous tracking signals to all vehicles in the same vicinity. Think of the car being to drive, but with all of the information of a boat's radar system.

so you're saying the human shouldn't have been day-dreaming even though the car had lulled him into a sense of false security by doing all the driving for him?

you mean if we give people houses instead of making them pay for them they don't take care of them?

you mean if we tell people the car is doing all the driving instead of them, they won't also try to pay attention because we say 'now dont you go to sleep while driving!'

i swear some of you have never taken a psych 101 class.

if I haven't mocked Cad's lack of self awareness enough, I find it amusing that he keeps making fun of the 3 numbers at the end of my user name...while he has 3 numbers in his user name.

No, this is where some people realize we can barely make anything that doesn't have a glitch in it. So let's not quite jump to the point of thinking cars will be driving themselves by 2020.

Humans can barely make anything that doesn't have a glitch in it because we are flawed, therefore we can't rely on driverless cars and must rely on .....humans to drive cars.

What's the technology specs involved with all this?

Is there competing tech on autonomous vehicles, more than the brand of vehicle?

Is there a car company that has better awareness? Or is it all the same?
