You do realize that drivers get into wrecks in those same situations all. the. time.
so of course its ok if robot cars kill a few people too right?
We don't demand zero accidents and fatalities from the airlines, we know that there will be crashes and people will die on rare occasions, we know that overall flying is the safest mode of transportation. Statistics will probably already show that on a per mile driven basis self driving cars have a lower accident rate that humans.

I've been saying it for years, I'm all for self driving cars, but I'll wait 5-10 years to buy mine, once all the kinks are worked out

More govt money please.
And for everyone saying we will all be in autonomous cars in 10 years. No, and not even close.

All of this will be solved when vehicles start to send out anonymous tracking signals to all vehicles in the same vicinity. Think of the car being to drive, but with all of the information of a boat's radar system.
This technology already exists for aircraft and is being required for all aircraft private and commercial in the near future, it is not expensive and the next logical step would be to require it in cars.

To be fair, average drivers do this all the time, too.
Yes, and these aren't additional people added to the category of average drivers. Likely the people that have these cars are the same people that would have done this without this autonomous car. In both cases, odds are the person was probably distracted by their phone. This person probably thought they were being safer with this car...too bad they're too glued to their phone to read the manual.
Moral:. Don't be a lazy POS. Drive/ride with your eyes on the road, at least until they get better technology.

Car manufacturers can't get simple shite right without a plethora of recalls
Heck, Ford has steering wheels falling off.
Millions and millions of airbags recalled.
Ford truck doors can open while driving even when they appear to be closed.
Nissan power steering clamps causing fires.
Honda seatblet latch problems.
List goes on and on. We have had air bags, seat belts, hose clamps and steering wheels for decades. Maybe we should figure out the typical easy stuff first.
