My favorite part of CAD's rants on this topic is his sig quote, which was me just posting an actual fact based on actual data that he seemed to think was super funny and out there and sig worthy

No he's not. He's merely pointing out the fact that there is a long way to go with this technology and we shouldn't cede all control to the driverless algorithm. Not trying to white knight for the guy but he brought up several really interesting possibilities of failure in the previous thread on this (imperfect roads, sensors glitch or become obstructed, the ole cliche moral decision making, and examples like this scenario of course). I find that type of outlook way more reasonable than "well the techs not perfect but human drivers suck too so frick it".

I don’t think anyone has said it is time to roll out self-driven cars as the standard consumer vehicle. That’s the straw man. Obviously there are still thugs to resolve and improve on. Whether those improvements get us to that point in 2020 (unlikely), 2025, or 2040 (also unlikely) no one here knows.

Pretending that these crashes are a sign that the technology has failed is ridiculous though.

Not sure a single person has argued any of those points, so that indeed would be a strawman.

Maybe not in this particular thread but there are definitely some people on here that hold this position.

Agree completely. I think his point is that the safest possible combination is this technology plus a fully aware human driver with manual override and it will be quite a while until we can get rid of the latter completely

Okay and no one here has argued we should quit pursuing the technology because of these incidents, so who is actually guilty of the strawman here?

So, you're off base here:

quote:

He's merely pointing out the fact that there is a long way to go with this technology

CAD is absolutely not on the "technology has a ways to go" bandwagon. He has made it very clear that autonomous driving technology should NEVER become a thing. So yea, he's actually argued exactly that.

I was about to give you shite for using technically but you edited before I could goddammit. That word is as overused as "strawman." It almost got me as triggered as you are right now.

Arguing for or against the nebulous “Board” is a waste. I’m sure someone somewhere holds every position, that doesn’t make them relevant.

I made an off-handed comment about how this crash ultimately doesn’t matter. I then took issue with CAD’s post about these deaths.

Since then the whole thing has been “you think this is totally safe.”

I read it after I posted and it really made no sense to have it there.

Fair enough, and yet somehow I find myself arguing about what CAD actually believes

Whatever, we're all gonna get buttfricked by AI anyway so who cares

If you buy one of these vehicles and you don't realize that there is a massive difference between a small compensation in adjusting speed to the car in front of you and slamming on the brakes for a stopped vehicle when it comes into the radar zone then you probably shouldn't be driving anyway.

There is no good excuse to blame autopilot when it is your job to be paying attention to all driving conditions. It's the drivers fault.

i cant wait for a single one of you 'robot-knighting' lemmings on here to do the following:

- let your small children out to play in the street declaring it a 'robot safe' zone

- allow robot cars to navigate said street while your kids are chasing balls and small animals while robot cars are doing robot things like going the speed limit and 'checking the environment way better than humans can'.

i'll be here with my notepad writing down the names of volunteers.

Shel11111? You ready to put your name at the top of the list to go first?

PUT YOUR CHILDREN'S LIVES WHERE YOU MOUTH IS
