Southern Living blows now. I canceled my subscription when the carpetbaggers took over some years ago.
I never heard of this "tradition". I was a wedding coordinator at a plantation for a while, have never lived outside the South, and most of my family consider Tennesee Yankee territory. We are also Baptist though, so the bourbon would be a no go anyway.

First thing that crossed my mind
“And just as sure as these southerners bury a bottle of bourbon to protect the sanctity of their wedding weather, Ole Miss will face these allegations with unwavering faith. The question remains: under these bourbon soaked stately oaks will, once again like the Confederates of days long gone, these sons be punished by the sins of their fathers?”

Mfers just be lying.
Juneteenth and Black National Anthem
And btw I also take issue with the notion that “bless your heart” is mostly used to mean “you stupid” or some negative shite. Maw maw said that to mean her heart went out to you for some reason.

Funny this topic popped up as I was just a recent participant in this tradition. The wedding was in Connecticut and everyone besides myself (born and raised in Nola) was from Connecticut. The parents secretly buried a bottle of bourbon on the beach where my sister in law was getting married a month prior. Morning of wedding day they drag us down to the beach, start digging and there is the bottle of bourbon. We all take a shot and cheers to the couple getting married. Pretty cool tradition.
The weather was fricking PERFECT.

I cook the best crawfish you ever had using my grandpas pot. And we did this. Definitely a tradition in parts of Mississippi that people on here know nothing about outside of the movies.

Not even joking, this sentiment seems to be the easiest way to tell how deep your family's Southern roots go

Over my 50ish years, I've met Lewis Grizzard in person (RIP). I've read Faulkner, Warren, James Dickey, and more. I've walked the streets of Savannah and visited Jerry Clower in Yazoo City.
I've attended a dozen churches in rural Tennessee, practiced law across Louisiana and Mississippi, sipped bourbon in Kentucky, sampled tobacco in the Carolinas, hauled cattle across Texas, gotten arrested in Arkansas, and picked oranges in Florida, peaches in Georgia, and strawberries in Ponchatoula. I've even vacationed in Bayou La Batre (Forrest Gump's "hometown").
My family's own local heritage predates the Louisiana Purchase. I have read, studied, and lived southern history in every way imaginable--from folklore to literature to Southern Baptist theology to college football.
All of that to say I have never encountered this bourbon bottle nonsense. True Southerners know bourbon (and all whiskey) is only meant for imbibing or possibly wound care, so if Southern brides-to-be are slipping off to bury pre-nuptial bottles, they are damn sure emptying them completely beforehand.

I have an idea, because I've never heard of this before either, how about do not schedule your wedding on a Sat. in the fall. You know, during football and hurricane season.
You will increase your attendance and lessen chances of rain.
And drink the bourbon- you're going to need it.

I’ve never heard of this- it must be a nouveau riche practice.

I have heard of this. Just don’t know anyone who actually did it.
Might be one of those word out mouth stories that never actually happened.
