Never heard of it. It seems like a stretch for an article. Probably talked to one nutcase and embellished the entire tradition.

Other cultures just lump the South into one melting pot, however the South has all sorts of different subcultures.

Firstly, there’s very little Southern about Tennessee or Kentucky from a Louisiana - Alabama perspective. It’s almost the Midwest. Is it corny and country? Yes most definitely but not the same Southern.

Arkansas has its own odd traditions like putting coleslaw on hamburgers and painting rocks, coupled with the complete disdain for cell service and WiFi.

Georgia and South Carolina have a little different nuance themselves with a little more movie southern dialect. All the idiotic songs (read bro country) seem to have their origins there.

Where things get wacky and quite possibly topsy-turvey is when you get to North Carolina, parts of Virginia and Eastern TN and KY. That’s where I have to assume this whiskey burying myth hails from. From their high pitched Gomer Pyle accents to their unfathomable devotion to Bojangles chicken, they are some odd customs. I suspect that’s where wasting a bottle of bourbon comes from.

Folks in Louisiana are a mish mash of Cajun, French, Creole, Mississippi and East Texas. We have our own uniqueness in and to itself.

Lastly, I’ve only heard of this “hoppin John” while watching a show with the wife during off season. My grandmother never cooked a meal that wasn’t in cast iron and we never ate anything of the sort.
I have eaten similar foods in the Caribbean islands, Honduras, Belize, and even over in the Bahamas. But I’ve never laid eyes on it in Louisiana.

First thing that crossed my mind “And just as sure as these southerners bury a bottle of bourbon to protect the sanctity of their wedding weather, Ole Miss will face these allegations with unwavering faith. The question remains: under these bourbon soaked stately oaks will, once again like the Confederates of days long gone, these sons be punished by the sins of their fathers?”

Spot f’n on. Well done.
