I have a theory that some might dismiss but I believe possesses some merit.

Tobacco is a very labor intensive crop. There are few people that possess the capital, labor, and technology needed to harvest tobacco and covert it to cigarettes or other products.

Because only major tobacco companies can produce cigarettes or tobacco products, it is easier for the federal government to regulate it and collect excise and sales taxes on it.

As much as people like to shite on tobacco for its detrimental health impacts, alcohol isn't far off. The fact is that many individuals lack the capacity to consume alcohol in adequate portions without endangering themself or others. Alcohol consumption in above average doses routinely results in violent and erratic behavior which does more harm than good.

Meanwhile, marijuana lacks many of the chronic diseases attributed to the other two drugs. It is a relatively low labor intensive crop which can be harvested by individuals and small groups. Based on my understanding, it's something that is quite easy to produce and consume or sell. I have admittedly never smoked it, nor do I know the specifics of its legal and illegal commerce.

What this all boils down to is that there is a large amount of potential weed consumption that the government is unable to tax if people decided to start growing their own crops.

They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do just as well — you just realize that it's not worth the fricking effort. There is a difference.

If you want to understand a society, take a good look at the drugs it uses. And what can this tell you about American culture? Well, look at the drugs we use. Except for pharmaceutical poison, there are essentially only two drugs that Western civilization tolerates: Caffeine from Monday to Friday to energize you enough to make you a productive member of society, and alcohol from Friday to Monday to keep you too stupid to figure out the prison that you are living in.

I'm glad mushrooms are against the law, because I took them one time, and you know what happened to me? I laid in a field of green grass for four hours going, "My God! I love everything." Yeah, now if that isn't a hazard to our country … how are we gonna justify arms dealing when we realize that we're all one?

quote:

Here is my final point...About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography...What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, or take into my body as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet? And for those who are having a little moral dilemma in your head about how to answer that question, I'll answer it for you. NONE of your fricking business. Take that to the bank, cash it, and go fricking on a vacation out of my life.

quote:

Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?

quote:

That's what I hate about the war on drugs. All day long we see those commercials: "Here's your brain, here's your brain on drugs", "Just Say No", "Why do you think they call it dope?" … And then the next commercial is [singing] "This Bud's for yooouuuu." C'mon, everybody, let's be hypocritical bastards. It's okay to drink your drug. We meant those other drugs. Those untaxed drugs. Those are the ones that are bad for you.

quote:

Pot is a better drug than alcohol. Fact! … I'll prove it to you. If you're at a ball game or a concert and someone's really violent and aggressive and obnoxious, are they drunk or are they smoking pot? [The crowd answers "Drunk."] Wow! We all know the truth.

Thank you very much, Mr. Hicks.

There are literally no good answers to this question.

It's an embarrassment.

The real answer is because blacks and Hispanics smoked it back in the day and the white landed gentry (policy makers) were scared that the white women would get raped by these high monorities. True story.

tl;dr because racism

Because if you have an auto accident or drop a crane boom on someone on a construction site there is no test to determine if you were impaired by the marijuana or if it was a true accident.

Because alcohol and pharmaceutical companies don't want the competition.

I hate the stigma I get for being a pot smoker, but I'm not drinking and driving like the rest of the fools

It pretty much is. It's like speeding at this point. Walk around anywhere and you'll see and smell it. That's how things like this work. It's not a light switch.

I'm growing right now in Colorado. While it's been fun, it's a lot more work than you think. If your want to grow indoors, it cost a lot of money to get setup. I'll probably do it soon. But I'm going the natural route, and am growing outdoors.

I'm watering them every day, picking through them and removing dead leaves, searching for signs of pests. If I want to feed them with nutrients, that takes at least an hour. Trimming the plants is a pain in the arse. Especially with how sticky the live plants are. You then have to dry them, then cure them.

I've been doing this for over 4 months, almost 5. It'll be another 6-8 weeks before I finish harvesting. It takes a lot of work to get good weed. Much more than just putting a seed in the ground and an occasional water.

Every adult in Colorado is allowed to grow 6 plants, 3 flowering, at a time. And yet almost nobody does it. Why? Take away the black market, and the price drops by 2/3s. I can buy an ounce for $100 any day. The shiskaberry I'm smoking now, some of the best I've ever smoked, was under $80 including taxes.

It's reasonably priced enough that people would rather just buy it. You're allowed to brew beer. How many beer drinkers homebrew? The government will still get their money.

Illegal weed is big business for the cops, judges, court system, lawyers, prisons, jails , etc. These people depend on it for their lively hood.

Because it makes you feel like you're driving 60 MPH, when you're only doing 10. It also makes you laugh uncontrollably, sometimes. We ain't got no use for slow laughing drivers.

Very true. Though finally other people with big money are fighting for legalization to profit from. So at least there's finally a battle going on. And with public opinion being the majority and growing, it's slowly becoming legal nationally.

I personally don't have a problem with any drugs, legal or not. The problem I have is when other people abuse it and intrude on other peoples rights.

OP, originally illegal because politicians owned lots of land that was sold for timber. Marijuana plants can produce up to 3x as much paper than a tree can. All about the money...

Now, I'd assume that big pharm companies are profiting greatly and keep lining the pockets of politicians.
