Cut off unemployment checks

Hypothetically, if sleepy joe were to cutoff unemployment checks for the next 12 months, many currently receiving unemployment would miraculously find a job.

But now businesses are having a hard time filling positions like accountants, pilots, teachers and other blue/white collar jobs.

There's a restaurant by my house that's been around for a while. Called in a to go order and got this..."We are temporarily closed due to a staffing shortage with waitresses, waiters, kitchen staff and cooks."

we can't find ANY qualified candidates when we have an opening. Tons of resumes come in still, but nothing that we're looking for.

Maybe y’all are just too picky

When boomers and Gen X got their jobs they could get a decent wage starting out as a warm body and learn on the job. Today companies want ready to insert people with no training. It's lazy and they blame the employee pool on being lazy.

My gen X arse humped open-hole logging tools in 110+ temps in the central valley of California as a "warm body"... but in general, you're right. OJT is dead, and reduced margins killed it in the minds of hiring managers.

Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of these open jobs are really because:
1. Companies are looking for someone meeting their exact needs @ what the last guy made, and are so understaffed that no one has the availability to mentor workers, or
2. Applications are reviewed by someone who has no clue that an applicant meets 90+% of their criteria because they know nothing of what is demanded by the position (or AI is screening applications).

As a Gen x with 20+ years in my industry, I agree. My director always thinks we have bad job candidates, I’m always looking for the guy I can train up. We argue about this shite all the time. All his questions in interviews are about their “experience” while I’m always trying to determine their level of “grit” and ability to think on their feet. These are IT jobs that involves lots of troubleshooting and problem solving.

Lot of boomers decided not to go back to work after COVID + millennials are lazy.

A lot of them want to pay entry level wages but demand years of experience.

Society is pretty much set up on credentialism, which leads to the plug and play scenario you listed above. It pigeonholes people and limits opportunity.

I think its too entrenched to ever change back. A couple of generations have grown up with it.
