There are people (especially in academia) who truly believe America has a "bare bones" welfare system.

Yet in Lousiana, you can ever get YOUR AIR CONDITIONING paid for if you have low enough income.

Meanwhile true middle and upper middle class are taxed to hell and wait until late 20s early 30s to have their first child because that’s how long it takes to get stable enough to be responsible enough financially to handle it.

Zero incentive to make good decisions and rewarding the stupidity and irresponsibility.

When the government will take care of you from cradle to grave... you can frick everything and just fire away with no worry of how you will take care of the children.

There have been countless times the system could be updated by Republicans. Like now for example...

Poverty is big business for both sides. Don't be naive.

Has Trump's Box-O-Food idea already gone by the wayside?

In this country, our poorest citizens (and non-citizens) are rewarded the most for having more children, not marrying, and making no effort to improve their own lives. Why do we continue to tolerate this, and how can real change be initiated?

What do you mean so backwards? The system is working exactly how those that run it, want it to work.

I'm a registered republican but there's very few politicians democratic, republican, or independent that are actually interested in improving anything. The only thing they are concerned with is making money for themselves. In the words of the late great George Carlin: "It's a big club and you ain't in it"

You’re going to get a lot of dumb responses from dumb people from the South in this thread who have no idea what they’re talking about.

because that's how the Democrats get their votes to stay in office for a life time.

I think you any many others wonder the same thing. Why do we pay for any child after their first mistake? Incentivize sterilization in the poor communities. Also, any man or woman that gets convicted of a felony should be neutered. That is a worthwhile cause for tax money.

An article I just read that said that Alabama's most obese county is also the county that has the highest unemployment and most on food stamps.

Something just doesn't make sense about this.

What doesn’t make sense? It costs a lot to eat healthy and very little for fast/processed food.

That's my point. How does something that makes no sense whatsoever continue basically unquestioned when all it is doing is perpetuating poverty and learned helplessness?

Because it does make sense. At a political level, not a rational level. This is political policy. And has been pointed out it's driven by votes only.

Our political system is broken. A rational system would not end in Hillary vs. Trump. That's insane.

FIFY - There are very few of those in local, state, or federal government.
