Why is our social welfare system so backward?

In this country, our poorest citizens (and non-citizens) are rewarded the most for having more children, not marrying, and making no effort to improve their own lives. Why do we continue to tolerate this, and how can real change be initiated?

Because decisions are made by our government based on buying votes and what “feels right” at the time.
No room for logic in this system.

Countrymen, the long experience of our late miseries I hope is sufficient to persuade everyone to a present correction of himself, And think not that either my pains nor the adventurers' purses will ever maintain you in idleness and sloth...
...the greater part must be more industrious, or starve...
You must obey this now for a law, that he that will not work shall not eat (except by sickness he be disabled). For the labors of thirty or forty honest and industrious men shall not be consumed to maintain a hundred and fifty idle loiterers.
-John Smith

Because of the people voted in postions to make these decisions.

Because we live in an SJW/PC world now...

Yeah, we've come a long way since Jamestown. John Smith is celebrated historically for saving the colony. A leader making a similar declaration today would be vilified.

Because its designed to buy votes
Not to do anything good

An article I just read that said that Alabama's most obese county is also the county that has the highest unemployment and most on food stamps.
Something just doesn't make sense about this.

I like Tammy and she cuts a good hair but I ain’t supporting her lifestyle. Lincoln don’t want us to have slaves well them fat cats up north are going to have to pay for the poor white trash children that would be living high on the hug in the old days.

That's my point. How does something that makes no sense whatsoever continue basically unquestioned when all it is doing is perpetuating poverty and learned helplessness?

It's pathetic we can't hold people to be accountable for not pulling their own weight
Sick, and disabled should be taken care of... but if you can work, then damnit, I'm tired of paying your way while you do nothing
Personal accountability needs to come back in a big way

Correct. It's not designed to help anyone but politicians.

That’s half of it. The other half is the corporate interests. The grocery stores love SNAP. Housing management companies love Section 8.

Don’t worry baw, we elected Donald Trump. He is only the spark of this revolution. It’s a clear sign of the animosity this populace harbors for the elitist political class, and since he has been so successful so far, we will follow this up with re-election followed by another populist president until we right this ship.

Upvote for using populace and populist correctly in the same post.

The only the government should provide for people in need is bare essentials concerning food and temporary housing for people that need it. Sometimes people hit a rough patch and need help to get back on their feet but it shouldn't be a lifestyle.
