Medical community is shying away from using eponyms.

When did this become a blanket insult for every situation?

Ex. "This liberal cut me off in traffic today" or " come on officer, don't be a liberal, give me a break this time" or " After he came back from Iraq he was a real liberal, he started beating his wife and drinking everyday"

I'm disappointed that I've never heard one of these IRL.

Actually, that's a really good idea - I'll have to start doing this

Not in this thread.

goldenbadger was implying that the name change was due to the PC movement. That's incorrect in fact, but the PC movement is correctly associated with modern political liberalism.

I had one of my old high school buddies die of that not too long ago. Whatever you call it, it's a death sentence, maybe a little less worse than Alzheimers.

We've become more medically knowledgeable. I think people are more comfortable using the actual terms (although this is an acronym). Plus people are living longer in general so the disease has more time to rear its ugly head without being hidden by other ailments or causes of death. This has increased the diagnosis rate and its become a lot more people's disease.....not just Lou Gherig's.

Because hardly anyone knows who Lou Gehrig is anymore.

And LGD isn't as good an Acronym as ALS

I think most people understand that the odds of Lou Gehrig dying from Lou Gehrig's disease are so low that it was probably just a government plot.
